LINES TO NEW ZEALAND.
Fair, happy Isle* beneath Australian skies. Where erst dwelt men “ unknowing and unknown," , Whose savage nature spum’d all softer ties For war and murder : and whose mind* alone Held Mars supreme,—paid homage to his throne. He viewed their actions with, delighted eye,—, And .them he marked peculiarly iiis own ; They heard unmoved the hapless prisoner's try, Condemn’d for them, by their accurst revenge, to die, Nbw Zealanp! oh, since then happy ehangej Hath taken place throughout thy fertile land! -Secure and unmolested man may range: And rising towns in place of forests stand. Peace reigns triuraphaat,—man’s laborious hand Hath changed the aspect which thou once didst wear, . And smiling Plenty, with prolific wand. Hath touched the rugged soil, yet young and bare,— And yielding, pregnant earth, blooms fruitful everywhere. Is not thisgood ? Doth it'not gratify The sense to view what cljkngcs Time hath wrought ? To mark improvements’— cast a searching eye O'er a young, land, with Heaven’s high favours fraught f An elevated theme for deepest thought, To contemplate the spread of Gospel seeds! Christ’s own nligion hath victorious fought And conquer’d Paganism lifeless bleeds! Raise then the thanks to Cop for his Almighty deeds, • A- F.
