REVIEW OF THE SAN FRANCISCO MARKET. (From the “ Alta California,”) Since the date of our last notice of the state of the markets twelve vessels have arrived from Eastern domestic ports, two from Europe, one from China, and twenty-three from coast domestic ports, making the large aggregate of forty-five for the week. The largo importations of most kinds of provisions, together with the apprehensions felt that further shipments now on the way will soon come to hand, in conjunction with already ample supplies, have contributed to continue the downward tendency noticed in our last. In regard to other branches of trade, no particular effects are preceptible, as resulting from the additions that have been made to our stocks. But, on the whole, after a careful survey of the business transacted during the week, we are obliged to observe, that matters look more unpromising for the interests of shippers abroad than any have done at any period since the commencement of the year. The number of articles which can be named that are netting profits, is extremely limited; the majority can be placed at rates barely covering cost and charges; while many descriptions of property can only be disposed o

at a heavy sacrifice. This state of things is solely atiributable to the fatal mistake which parties abroad have made, in overwhelming us with a flood of every kind of merchandize entirely disproportionate to the wants and capacity for consumption of the population, in our opinion the interior is consuming at the present moment as large a quantity of goods as at any previous period in past years, but dealers buy only to supply immediate wants; they are perhaps not in a condition, as a general thing, to lay in large stocks, while sucb as have ample means are indisposed to operate freely, under the supposition that the most favourable time tor them to invest has not yet arrived. The bulk of the California bound fleet will arrive here in the next month; their cargoes will exceed the consumption of the State for that time; therefore, the middle of July will fin'd us with more goods than we have at present, and any general re-action before autumn from the stagnation now felt, appears improbable, if not impossible. , The small diversify of articles which have changed hands show the restricted character of the business done. In addition, we remark briefly, that flour was firm up to Friday, under the influence of a large demand. Most holders of Chile have not been offering. We only hear of the sale of 5000 packages in one lot, equal to 2000 full sacks, made on Wednesday, understood to be at 9 dols. 50 without inspection. Clear Pork was offered on Thursday at 23 dole., and Mess at 22 dole. 50; we heard of no sales at these figures. Beef continued firm and scarce. Haras have sold lower. Bacon sells freely at good rates. Butter of good quality has changed hands at 32| cents. Lard in kegs at 16£ cents ; in tin at 18$ cents. Cheese has still an upward tendency* Mackerel have slightly improved ; codfish are still depressed. Both foreign and domestic Rice are heavy; the stocks are very large, and further importations of the former anticipated.
