COMMERCIAL RECORD.
(From the "Empire,” August T9.) The splendid passage made by the steam ship Victoria must be highly gratifying to every one who feels a real interest in the improvement of our means of communication with the mother country. It is the more bo, on account of the previous failures of the company to which this fine ship belongs, as it goes far to assure ns that experience will remedy the errors so unhappily fallen into in the commencement of the line. By this arrival, we have mercantile dates from London to the 18th of June. The wool sales closed on the evening of the 7ih, with a result showing an advance of about Id. per lb. on fine wools from Sydney and Melbourne, ami an average of February rates for the lower class descriptions, from all Australian poits. The sales . comprised a total of 33,758 bales of colonial wools, 6559 being from New South Wales, and 17,689 from Victoria. The latest tallow market quotations in London were as follow :—Town tallow, 48s. 9d. per cwt.; yellow Russia, 475.; Australian beef, 445. 9d. to 465.; ditto sheep, 455. to 475. 6d, Sailed New South Wales hides were selling SOlbs. to 60lhs. at 3|d, to 4d.; 401hs. to 451bs. at 3Jtl. to 3Jd. ; seconds and thirds at ‘id. to 33d. The imports of wool into London up to the 18tli of June, amounted to 22,000 bales, of which 5077 were Lora Port Phillip, and 5174 from Sydney. The rates of freight for the Australian ports were on the decline at the date of the Victoria’s departure. In one week the ships leaving for Melbourne and Sydney amounted to 5302 tons, of which the larger amount (2670 tons) were for this port. Large shipments of goods were still being made. Mails for the Australian colonies, consisting of 141 bags, were despatched by the sailing ship Stratford, ou the 4th of June, in consequence of the withdrawal of the A.R.M.S, Co.’s contract. The last report of the Money Market will be found in our genera! i-umraary. 'By the Victoria, our dates from Adelaide and Melbourne are to the 20th and 25th respectively. At Adelaide, the mill prices of flour were : Fine, ,£24; secconds, £22. The price of gold at Melbourne continued at 775. 6d. The banks were contracting their accommodations especially with reference to speculations in land.
SYDNEY MARKETS.—Fiu day August 20: The Mills. —Messrs Barker and Co.: 'There has been i. moderate supply of wheat in this week. The price has rather receded, present quotations being from 9s. tid. to Ifls. per bushel for best samples ; flour remains at £*2!) for fine, £23 for second quality, per ton ct 2COO lbs. Bran os. 6d. per bushel—Mr. Breillat; Jhere is no alteration to note. The supply ot wheat is limited, and prices rule from 9s. to 10s. per bushel for the best samples. Some large arrivals of flour have taken place, hut they do not affect the price of the article, the best quality being firm at £25 per ton, and seconds £23 per ton. Bran 3s. per bushel.—Nr. Smart; There has been a moderate supply of wheat at these mills during the week. Brices having ranged from qs. (id. to 10s, for best samples. Flour is without alteration.—Messrs. Furlong and Kennedy: No alteration has taken place since last report—wheat being worth 9?, 6d. to 10s. per bushel; flout £‘2s for fine, and £23 for seconds, per ton. Bran 3s. £d. per bushel, Messrs. J. and 11. Hayes’ Albion Mills; flour remains without alteration ; fine flour 251. per 2000 lbs.; seconds 23/. Bran, 3s. tid. per bushel, Wheat from Ds. 6d. to 10s. per bushel. Bread.—The principal bakers are selling the 21b loaf at 7d.
