STUDY WAR NO MORE.

Come rein the war-horse, sheath the sabre, Quench the gun-igniting brand, Let each undoubting grasp his neighbour Frank and freely by the hand. Come wreath each brow with olive branches. Where helm and plume were hung before; Raze the strong bastion, fill the trenches, And study vengeful war no more. Bright peaceful streams are flowing near us, Down the mountain, through the vale, With songs of melting love to cheer us. Where’er the clouds of grief prevail. List, a voice is in their waters, Where they kiss each shelving shore, Whispering, “ Nature’s sons and daughters. Study vengeful war no more.” All nature points to man his duty— The flowers that deck old ocean’s isles Have all a mission in their beauty, And each a lesson in its smiles. Then with pure and spotless garment. Clothe the vile heart that sinned of yore, Shun contention’s bloody cerements, Study vengeful war no more. How soon the spot becomes a mountain, In the rude soil of man’s dark soul; One angry word pollutes the fountain And muddy streams o’er-run the whole. Oh when shall Peace, her branches waving. Fan every bosom’s inmost core ; Bid man, the strife of factions leaving, To study vengeful war no more! Then years of peace would swiftly follow, And every heart to love be changed, Then no more friendship false and hollow. And no more soul from soul estranged. > Then Peace would raise her milky banner. O’er the fields once drenched in gore. And high in knowledge, mind, and manner, Frail man would study war no more. Then would earth foreshadow heaven And every song be one of love; ! . And, sinful'hearts till then unshrlven, Would learn to raise their, thoughts above j Still growing sweet to swell the story •; •Of great Redemption’s mystic lore. To sing in halls of quenchless glory. Peace, peape, all peace for evermore. • * Wm, Ltw, Gaclow-gate, Glasgow,
