ELECTIONS FOR THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES.

City of Auckland. The Nomination of candidates to represent the City in this branch of the Colonial Legislature was fixed for Wednesday last, the lOih inst. A Preparatory Meeting of Electors, convened by Advertisement, in one ef the newspapers, was held in Mr. Thompson’s large room, High Street, on Monday evening, at which the candidates were invited to attend for the purpose of staling their views and answering such questions as might be proposed. Messrs. O’Brien, O’Neill, Daldy, and Makepeace Were present, and gave such explanations as were called for. Mr. Bartley was absent, but—as he satisfactorily slated afterwards or the hustings—only because be had not seen Ihe advertisement, or been in any way "apprised oflhe intention to bold the meeting. At noon on Wednesday, Thomas Beckham, Esq., Returning Officer, With the candidates and their respective friends, appeared on the hustings in Shorlland Street. The Returning Officer having read the writ, expressed, in a few appropriate words, his hope that good order would be preserved, and that i\ fair and impartial hearing would be granted to every speaker. The Nominations were dien proceeded with as follows Mr,. John Kelly proposed, and Mr. George Patterson seconded Mr. John Makepeace, us a fit and proper representative. Dr. Campbell proposed, and Mr. T. C. Williams seconded Thomas Houghton Bartley, Esq. Mr., John McDougall proposed, and Mr. John Campbell seconded James O’Neill, Esq. Mr., J. W. Bain proposed, and Mr. James Macky seconded Captain William Crush Balov. Mr. Patrick Dignan proposed, and Mr. Charles Lowson seconded Laugulin O’Brien, Esq. The proposers and seconders severally spoke briefly on the merits of their respective candidates, and—after all the nominations Iliad taken place—the candidates themselves, in the order in which they had been proposed, addressed the electors. These speeches also were short, and, for the most part, consisted of references to topics on which the opinions of the speakers were already known to coincide with those of considerable numbers, if not the whole, of the electors. A show of hands for each candidate was then called for by the- Returning Officer. results appeared in favour of Mr. Makepeace, Mr. O’Neill, and Mr. O’Brien. A poll was thereupon demanded by Mr. Bartley and Captain Daldy, which it was announced would lake place on the following fliV. The polling commenced at nine o’clock on Thursday morning, but for some hours it proceeded languidly,—probably not mere

than one hundred and fifty electors having recorded their votes at one o’clock p.m. Afterwards, however, it became more lively, and assumed a very animated character indeed during the la«t hour. Precisely at four o’clock the poll-books were closed, and shortly after the Returning Officer publicly announced the following as the final numbers: L. O’Brien, 446 J. O’Neill, 591 T. 11. Bartley, .... 269 J. Makepeace, .... 257 W. C. Daldy, 442 Messrs. O’Brien, O’Neill, and Bartley were therefore declared duly elected. The newly returned members, and also the unsuccessful candidates, expressed their gratitude to those who had supported them in the contest; and the meeting (which was very numerous and well-conducted) quietly dispersed, —having first, however, passed with loud cheering, a vote of thanks to the Returning Officer for the manner in which he had presided over the business of the election. Suburbs of Auckland. On Wednesday, immediately after the nominations for the City had been completed, the nomination for the Suburbs of Auckland took place. Major Matson proposed, and Mr. James Robertson seconded, Frederick. Ward Mf.rriman, Esq. Mr. J. A. Gilfdlan proposed, and Mr. IT. ieol seconded, William Field Porter, Esq. There being no other candidates these two gentlemen were declared duly elected to sit for the Suburbs in the House of Representatives. They acknowledged in fitting terms the honour conferred on them, and thus the business of this election was brought to a speedy and agreeable termination. Northern Division. The Nominations for this Division were next proceeded with, after the usual preliminaries, as follows: Mr. W. Laxton proposed, and Mr. Patrick Heath, seconded Allan O’Neill, Esq. Mr. John Bvcroft proposed, and Mr. W. Hay seconded, Thomas Spencer Forsaith, Esq. Mr. Joseph Lowe proposed, and Dr. Mc'Gauran seconded Walter Lee, Esq., Surgeon. The candidates having severally addressed the Electors, the show of hands was taken, and declared by the Returning Officer to bo in favour of Messrs. O’Neill and Lee, A poll was demanded by Mr, Forsaith, which will lake place on Thursday the 23rd inst., at the Police Office, Auckland, and at the several polling-places throughout the Division at which voles were taken during the recent election of members of the Provincial Council. Pensioner Settlements. The Nomination of Candidates to represent their electoral district took place at Onehnnga yesterday (Friday),!. J. Symonds, Esq., presiding as Returning Officer. Captain McDonald proposed and Mr. William Wood seconded John C. W. Bacot, Esq., Staff Surgeon. Sergeant Brennan proposed and Mr. James Warrener seconded Captain T.M. Haultain. Sergeant Murphy proposed and Mr. John Bates seconded Brigade Major Joseph Greenwood.

Major Greenwood addressed ihe meeting. The other candidates were not present. A show of hands was called for by the Returning Officer, which appeared in favour of Captain Ilaullain and Major Greenwood. A poll was demanded by si* electors on behalf of Dr. Racot. The voting will lake place this day (Saturday) at the various Pensioner Settlements. Southern Division.

Immediately after the close of the proceedings connected with the Pensioner Settlements, the Nominations for the Southern Division look place. Major Greenwood proposed, and Captain McDonald seconded Charles John Taylor, Esq. Dr. McGauran proposed and Sergeant Hogan seconded Major John Gray. Mr. James Dilworth proposed, and Mr. T. S. Forsuith seconded William Powditch Esq. The several candidates having addressed the meeting, a show of hands was taken which was in favour of Major Gray and Capt. Powditch. A poll was demanded by Mr. Taylor, which will take place on Tuesday the 25rd inst., at the Court House, Onehunga, atlhe other Pensioner Settlements, and at the various other polling places throughout the Division which have already been publicly notified.

A vole of thanks was given, with three hearty cheers, to the Returning Officer, and the business, which was conducted in a very orderly and creditable manner, concluded.
