There were throe candidates— Mr. J. T. Wicks Iced, proposed by Mr. Crompton, seconded by Mr. llursthouse; —Mr. Charles Brown proposed by Mr. Gladioli, seconded by Mr. T. King; and Mr. Win. liaise, proposed by Captain King seconded by Mr. Weston. The show of hands was declared by the Returning Officer to he in favour of Mr. liaise. The polling took place on the following day. The issue appears to have been determined mainly by the resignation of Mr. Wickslecd after he had polled a few voles, and Ihe consequent coalition between bis supporters and Mr. Brown’s. At the close of the poll the numbers were, Charles Brown 173 W. liaise 138 J, T. Wicksteed 12 Mr. C. Brown was of course declared duly elected. He briefly returned thanks. Mr. liaise spoke at more length, and—in the spirit usually shown by unsuccesful candidates whose generosity and patriotism exclude the promptings of envy and spleen which sway meaner and more sordid minds —congratulated Mr. Brown on his success, called on the electors to give him a fair t ial, and declared his own willingness to cooperate with him for the good of the Province.
