PROVINCIAL COUNCIL ELECTIONS.
NORTHERN DIVISION. On Thursday last, at noon, the final stale of the Poll for (his Division was publicly declared from the Hustings at the Market Place, Shortland-strcet, by Thomas Beckham, Esq., Returning officer. The numbers were as follows, —(being, it will be seen, in all but exact accordance with those published in our last): Allan O'Neill .... 208 Patrick Dignan . . . 20i James Carlton Hill . . 108 Patrick Donovan . . .102 Allan Kerr Taylor . . 110 Joseph May .... 85 Messrs, O’Neill, Dignan, Hill, and Donovan, were accordingly declared duly elected to serve in the Provincial Council, for the Northern Division. The successful candidates severally returned thanks to the electors in brief and appropriate terms. Mr. Taylor did not make any observations, but Mr. May spoke at some length, taking the opportunity to make a fresh confession of his political faith as “a Brownilc,” an “opponent of the Government,” an enemy to “oppression and deceit,” and a friend to “truth and justice.’' Such is Mr. May's estimate of his own qualifications. The estimate formed by the voters of the Northern Division of these merits, sufficiently appears in the fact, that he was not only at the bottom of the poll, and in a great minority as compared with his successful competitors, but that he was placed below even the other unsuccessful candidate in the proportion of 85 to 117 of the suffrages of the people. Mr. A. O’Neil! proposed and Mr. May seconded a vole of thanks to the Returning Officer, which was warmly and generally responded to. The proceedings then terminated. The attendance was not large. Southern Division. The only Return which has reached us since our last is that from the Coromandel Polling Place. The numbers there were.— Newman, 1 i ; Goodfellow. 11 ; iaylor, 11 ; Macky, 1 ; Bncklaud, 1 ; Dilworth, nil ; Hogan, nil. The four candidates having the largest numbers of votes are still, Messrs. Newman, Dilworth, Taylor, and Macky.—The Returns from Bargiawhia and Kawhia remain to be ascertained,
