TO THE ELECTORS OF THE PROVINCE OF AUCKLAND. / 'i ENTLEMEN, —The result of the recent vT Election lias this day been formally communicated to the public, and the Principal Returning Officer has officially declared that the choice of the majority of the Electors has fallen upon myself to_fill the office of Superintendent. To be chosen without solicitation on my part by the inhabitants of the Province to fill its highest place of public trust and confidence, I should, under any circumstances, esteem to be a most gratifying compliment. To receive this mark of confidence from the people of the Province, after having administered the Government as a servant of the Grown, is indeed a rare distinction, in which any subject of Her Majesty might justly feel*an honorable pride. For the generous confidence you have thus reposed in'iiic, I now beg to return you my sincere and grateful acknowledgments.

The fitness of the Inhabitants of New Zealand to enjoy the extraordinary powers of self-government which have recently been conferred upon them, will, for the most part, be tested by their conduct, in the exercise of those powers; and I trust that my future efforts for the benefit of the Province will prove that 1 have a lively consciousness of the novel character and grave responsibilities of the newly created office to which, by your suffrages, i have been called. Undertaking it, however, with no other object than to discharge its duties impartially and efficiently, and relying, as I trust I may continue to do, on the confidence and support of the community, I entertain a confident hope that, in conjunction with the Council, chosen, as no doubt it will bo, with due regard to the importance of the interests committed to its charge, I shall be able to aid materially in promoting the prosperity and developing the resources of the Province.
