ORIGINAL CORRESPONDENCE.
To the Editor of the New-Zealander.
Dear Sir, — I have for some time thought that any mention of the name of any respectable person in the columns of the Southern Cross was quite unworthy of attention, but as an anonymous writer in the number of that paper issued tins morning mixes up my name, with those of Mr. William Good, Mr. and Mrs. Maurice Kelly, Captain Powditch .and a Mr. Bolstrode, charging the first named with some selfish reason for his voting at the election of Superintendent, I think it but right to him to say, that I believe I was the only one of Colonel Wynyard’s Committee who had spoken with him on the subject; that his motives for desiring the return of Colonel Wynyard to the Superintendency appearrd entirely unselfish ; and that from anything lie said to me I could not imagine that any such motive as is attributed to him was ever entertained by him.
“ A Voter at Mr. Maurice Kelly’s” in very obscure language, makes some objection to my writing a letter of introduction to Mr. and Mrs. Kelly for Captain Powditch. Neither Captain Powditch nor myself being aware of a former old acquaintanceship, I was but too happy to introduce him to Mr. and Mrs. Kelly, fully satisfied that he would meet at their hands every mark of respect, a good old Irsh Cead Mille Faultah, and “ hospitality in every way worthy the once noble house of Hymans,” as I had done before him (albeit one of Colonel Wynyard’s supporters), and as I do not doubt Mr. Brown’s supporters have received also, with but one exception, viz., the very savoury salt of Mr. Kelly’s support. This writer also says, Mr. A. W. Hansard also stated that ‘the enemy made a move.*’ Perhaps I did. If I did I was correct, he made a move and —was check-mated.
One word more. If there are “ dying Snappers” are there not also dying sharks in the world, and which are the most dangerous \— I am, Yours, &c. A. W. Hansard. Friday Morning, July Bth, 1853.
