MELBOURNE COMMERCIAL INTELLIGENCE.
(Fiom the “ Melbourne Herald,” April 16.) Onr retrospect of local trade llii* week is not an agreeable one. High prices, with a tendency to a further tut v nc.e, is the general characteristic of mercantile affairs: while the stocks are in most cases, so far inadequate to the demand, that much of the usual course nf trade is rverrupted. Onr price current will show a considerable advance m many articles in tbe grocery and provision trade; horse provender lias also advanced to an extravagant figure ; ami ironmomjerv and other ar tides ot utility and steady demand, all partake of the upward tendency. With the large increase to onr population which is taking place every week, and with the awkward fact staling us iu the face drat all are consumers, and, none producers, I here is little chance of lower rates prevailing until after the winter months. We have nothing to add to our notices of the Hour trade during die week. In the Beer trade, bottled porter is almost out of the wholesale market, and 255. per dozen is readily paid for it. Gnmess’s stout is held for JI 1 per hoghshead, hut £ Id is all that is offered.
