By His Excellency Sir George Grey, a Knight Commander of the most Honorable Order of the Bath, Governor and Commander in-Chief in and over the Islands of New Zealand, and Vice-Admiral of the same, &c. &c, &c. rHEREAS Her Majesty has been graciously pleased, by Letters Patent under the Great heal of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland, bearing date the thirteenth day of September, one thousand eight hundred and fifty-two, to constitute and appoint me, Sir George Grey, Knight Commander of the Most Honorable Order of the Bath, to be Governor and Commander-in-Chief in and over the Islands of New Zealand with such powers and authorities as are vested in the Governor of the said Islands by an Act of the 15th and 16th year of Her Majesty's reign, intituled " An Act to grant a Representative Constitution to the Colony of New Zealand," together with all powers and authorities heretofore vested in me, the said Sir George Grey, as Governor-in-Chief in and over the Islands of New Zealand, and as Governor and Commander-in-Chief in and over the Provinces of New Ulster and New Munster, so far as the same are not repugnant to, nor would prevent or interfere with, the operation of the said recited Act, and also together with all powers and authorities by the said Letters Patent conferred : Now 1, Sir George Grey, do hereby proclaim and declare this Her Majesty's pleasure* and that I have this day assumed the powers and authorities vested in me by virtue of the said Letters Patent. Given under my hand, and issued under the Public Seal of the Islands of New Zealand,at Government House, at Wellington, in the Province of Wellington, in the Islands aforesaid, this seventh day of March, in the Year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and fiftythree. Colonial Secretary's Office, Auckland.. 25th April, 1853. •HE following Instructions to the Surveyor- - General, for the sele<tion of Lands from this date, are published for general informa4ion. By His Excellency's command, Andrew Sinclair, Colonial Secretary. 1. Allotments or portions of country land, for which more than one application was made to the Commissioner before four o'clock on Saturday, the 16th instant, shall be put up to public auction at the upset price often shillings an acre, 2. All future applications to purchase land will take priority strictly in the order of their presentation and registration at the Survey Office, and the day and hour of such presentation and registration will be certified upon each application as it comes in. 3. In cases where simultaneous applications are received for the same piece of land, it will be offered to competition by public auction. 4. Selections above eighty acres in extent in unsurveyed land must, where fronting a river, road, lake, or coast, be of a depth of not less than twice the frontage to such river, road, lake, or coast. 5. In cases where persons may have occupied and improved portions of Crown Land (not exceeding eighty acres) as homesteads on runs, but whose claims to the pre-emption of such homesteads under the General Land Regulations have not been determined, no selection interfering with such occupation will be allowed until the claim shall have been decided upon.
