PROVINCIAL COUNCILS ELECTIONS.

In accordance with the arrangements of a Preliminary Committee, a Public Meeting was held yesterday evening - , in Mr. Thompson’s Assembly Room, Osprey Inn, to take steps for selecting and bringing forward one or more candidates from among the Operatives and Labourers of Auckland to represent the interests of those classes in the forthcoming Provincial Council. The Meeting was very numerously attended, and the object for which it was convened seemed to engage the earnest and united sympathies of the assembly. Mr. Chas. Madden was called upon to preside. We regret that the occurrence of the meeting at an hour so close on that at which we must go to press, and other urgent demands upon our space, prevent our giving as full a Report of the proceedings as weshould olherwischavc wished to lay before our readers. We subjoin, however, the Resolutions, from which the course pursued and the conclusions arrived at will be evident. Moved by Mr. Alex. Wright, seconded by Mr. Cadman, and supported by Mr. J. T. Boylan, That this meeting approves of the object for which it has been convened by (he preliminary Committee : namely, to lake advantage of (he right which has been conferred upon the Operative and Labouring classes in the New Zealand Constitution Bill a right for which eminent leading politicians of the United Kingdom have struggled, but without success —as the surest means of breaking down the unjust system of Class Legislation. As it has at length come within our grasp—it is emphatically our interest and our duty, by an united effort to manifest by a wise and judicious exercise of the elective franchise at the ensuing election that we are both worthy and capable of using such rights and privileges to our own benefit—and at the same time without injury to any other class in the community, by returning a properly qualified person from our own ranks to represent us in the forthcoming Provincial Council of Auckland. This resolution, as well as all the others, was carried unanimously. Moved by Mr. Win. Griffin, seconded by Mr. Thomas Murphy, That in order to further the object of the Preliminary Committee, and of this meeting as expressed in the first resolution—it is expedient to elect a Committee from the present meeting which shall consist of twelve, with power to add to their number. The following are the names of the Committee chosen by the Meeting:— O Messrs. Alex. Wright ; Alex. Marshall ; James Derrora; Win. Griffin; Thos. Murphy, Jerome Cadman ; G. Madden; Francis While; Win. Harkins; and John Landers. To whom were subsequently added Messrs. J. T. Bovian, Robert Evans ; and W T . Lowe. Moved by Mr. James Derrom, seconded by Mr. Read, l hat the Committee now formed he empowered— and requested to select, and bring lorward one or more Candidates for representatives, from the Operative and Labouring classes, for approval or disapproval on Friday evening

April 22nd, to which lime this meeting be adjourned. Thanks having been voted to Mr. Thompson for his kindness in giving the use of his room for the occasion free of expense, and to the Chairman for his conduct in the Chair, the Meeting adjourned until Friday evening.
