The brig Kestrel, Captain Wallace, arrived m harbour on Saturday last after a rapid passage of nine days from Melbourne. She cleared out at the Custom House there on the sth inst.,bul was detained twelve days afterwards in consequence of damages sustained, by the pilot running herjinto a large vessel on working down Port Phillip, by which both vessels received much injury; the Kestrel’s figure-head being earned away, and her cut-water and - head-rails otherwise injured. She is a fine handy vessel, and one well adapted for the colonial t?ade. She reports the schooner Cremona, Captain Savery, about to sail for this port, and the barque Camilla, for Hokianga. The latter vessel, chartered by Capt. Wycherley, formerly of the Loui a. By the Kestrel, we also learn of the purchase of the barque Invincible, by our townsmen Messrs. Henderson and Macfarlane. Tbe addition of this fine vessel to the shipping of our port is one of which we may well be proud. Built in the Isle of Wight a few years ago, she possesses all the qualifications of strength, speed, and carrying capacities, combined with a fine model, which have rendered vessels from the yards of Cowes and Newport so famous. She was advertised to sail on tbe 25th instant from Melbourne. We hope soon to see here and that she may long be continued in the trade for which she has been so opportunely purchased. r \ he Kestrel also reports the schooner Border Maid, having sailed for Launceston, and that the barque Mousam, was advertised for sale. We sometime ago noticed tbe great activity existing amongst the shipping then in harbour, and it is with much pleasure that we again refer to such a gratifying indication of the rapidly increasing prosperity of our port, as that represented by tbe numerous vessels and amount of tonnage which have recently sailed hence and are now about to sail with cargoes of our exports. On Sunday last tbe barque Royal Shepherdess took her departure for Melbourne with one of the best assorted cargoes of timber and produce which has yet left the port for that market. On tbe same day the American whale ships Lion, Captain Nichols, and the Atkins Adams, Captain Fish, also sailed for their respective whaling grounds, the former, on her way home, to those she recently left on the line, and the latter to those around tbe Kingsmill Group. The barque Whitby arrived at Kiapara, has cleared again for Sydney, and the barque Charlotte is ready for sea, to proceed to Kaipara, also to load a cargo of timber for Sydney ; the schooner Camilla and Chilian barque Del war, were daily expected there for similar cargoes. The American ship Edward, Captain Mosher, is getting ready to proceed hence to Wangaroa for a cargo of spars and junk timber for Hobart Town. In addition to these the barque William; Hyde, Captain Applewhaite, tbe biig Kestrel, Captain Wallace, and schooner Will-’o-the-Wisp, Captain Bristow, are on the berth for Melbourne with cargoes all secured; and the brig Raven, Captain Thompson, will meet with her usual despatch for Sydney, and likely to sail to her day, a full ship. The St. Michael, Captain Prance is now fast filling up with copper ore, &c., for London. -—These are tangible proofs of our growing prosperity, which we may well congratulate our fellow colonists upon, with every hope of their being increasing for some time to come, as the list of vessels expected still continues a very large one. We deeply regret to learn that one of tbe Whitby’s ship’s company, a fine young man named Benjamin Leeland, lost his life in the Kaipara, in a most distressing manner. Leeland was endeavouring to ascend by means of the after derrick tackle, to the deck of the ship from a raft under,her stern. From some circumstance he lost his hold, and was precipitated into the river. Every exertion was made to save the poor fellow ; two boats having been manned and despatched in order to rescue him, but unhappily without avail.— Southern Cross. An American ship, and the barque Elizabeth from Gottenburgh via Adelaide, with a cargo of deals for this port, were reported olf tbe Heads yesterday, by the Cleopatra. —Melbourne Argus, March 21.
