Bv the Mod, which arrived in our harbour yesterday, we have Sydney papers to the 2nd instant. Beyond a few particulars of shipping and commercial intelligence, which will he found in our other columns, they contain no local matter of interest, and there had been no later arrivals from England. From Melbourne we have not received our own files by the Spencer , but by the kindness of Captain Martin we have journals to the 22nd of January, since supplemented by news to the 25th, received via Sydney. The slate of Melbourne continued deplorable, as regards the prevalence of crime, and the privations and sufferings of the teeming crowds of immigrants still pouring in. The Melbourne Market House had been totally destroyed by fire. In addition to the loss of the building, the property in the side stalls or shops let by the Corporation to
various individuals was consumed, as was also a great quantity of luggage belonging lo new arrivals, many of these imforlunaie immigrants lost llieir U tters of credit, and in short, (heir all, which had been stored in the building. 1 lie origin of the conflagration remained unknown, as person resided within the building, and (he fire at first was confined solely lo the roof. Humour attributed it lo an incendiary. The delay in obtaining a supply of water, and the want of efficiency in the fire-brigade are sharply commented on; and had it not been that the night vvas remarkably still, the ravages of the flames would probably have been vastly greater. We have noted a number of particulars connected with the Legislative proceedings and general stale of Victoria of which we shall on another day publish a digest.
