Auckland Mechanics' Institute. —On Wcd-j nesday evening a Lecture on the Stale of Chili in| 18*»0 was delivered in the Hall of (he Institute! by David Rough, Esq. . . .A special interest was! connected with this Lecture, Mr. Rough having] himself visited Chili at the period referred lo,\ and having enjoyed opportunities of makingj himself acquainted with the institutions of the] country and the manners and customs of the] people of which he had evidently turned to good. account. The results of his observations were, given in a well-written paper which conveyed, much information in a pleasant and intelligible* form. Our only regret was that there was not; a more numerous audience to share in the fication which it afforded to those who were present. „ ! "Auckland and its Neighbourhood."—We learn with pleasure that a new and greatly en-, larged edition of this excellent and trnst-worlhy account of the Auckland District is likely to be published iiv London, by Messrs. Smith and Elder. The well-informed, able, and disinterested Author has written three additional chapters, Viz.: —on the character and administration of. Captain Hobson, the first Governor of New Zealand ; on Bush Travelling in this country ;j and one on the attractive subject of the recent! Coil Discovery at Coromandel. The additionalj matter thus introduced will be about equal in bulk to the whole of the original pamphlet. The work will be illustrated by a carefully corrected map of the Auckland District, and a view of Auckland taken especially for this publication.] In this improved form we anticipate for the volume (for a volume it will now be) a circulation both at home and in the colonies which will, greatly extend the knowledge of Auckland ax it really is, which the pamphlet has already been the means of beneficially diffusing. ; Presbyterian Sabbath School. —We invite attention to the announcement in our advertising columns that a Sermon on behalf of this. School will be preached in the Scotch Church, at the forenoon service to-morrow, by the ltev. Alexander Reid, and that a Puhlic Examination of the children will take place at threeodock in 1 the afternoon. |
