Auckland Gold Field.— We have seen several letters received this .week Irom Coromandel, bringing intelligence to Friday. We learn that the diggings are as when w'e last reported comparatively unworked, the majority of those who 1 had come to Auckland at Christmas, and during the week of the Races, not having hitherto returned. From various causes it would seem also that some of those who arc on the ground are not exerting themselves with the perseverance or heartiness of purpose that are essential to success in- such an undertaking. We have been informed that a principal cause of disruption in some of the parlies was, that certain of (he diggers who were entrusted to bring up gold to Auckland made an improper use of it, and their companions who remained at the diggings, receiving “no returns,” and being left without « (revisions, became dissatisfied and disgusted. Veare informed, however, that in a few instances such a measure ?.f remuneration has rewarded even a moderate exertion as might encourage to increased effort. Of life diggers at Kapunga, Mr. -Bennett is represented as particularly hard-working and successful. At the pits where Mr. Bryan’s parly had previously dug, Mr, Hcaphy had washed 7s. worth of gold from one pan of earl|i. The best instance of recent success whiclwe have heard of, however, was at the Waiau, where Mr. Unibank, with a party of two, obtained, between Thursday and Sunday, about i4U oz. which they brought to (he Commissioner for weighing and safe keeping. Several of the old diggers on the spot were likely lo resume working on (he loth, when they would lake out the semimonthly licenses. Cricket. —The opening game of the season will take place on the Military Cricket Ground, this Jhaty, between the Civilians and the 58th Regiment. Wickets lo be pitched at half-past ten ((’clock. Band of the 58th Regiment.— We regret to slate that the prevailing affected several of the members of theßand (hat (he usual Thursday performance of music in the Government Lawn cannot lake place to-morrow.
