COAL,
To Frederick Wihtaker, John Salmon, an» W. S. Graiiame, Esquires. GENTLEMEN, — The Cropping out of Coal in several places, both to the North and South of Auckland, seems to indicate the existence of extensive Coal-fields in the Northern District of New Zealand. Seeing the probability of Steam Communication being established by way of Panama, between England and the Australasian Colonies, I know of nothing which would more certainly contribute to the advantage of the Port of Auckland and its neighbourhood, than the discovery, within a convenient distance, of Coal suitable for purposes of Steam navigation. In the hope of promoting this object, I shall have much pleasure in placing at your disposal the sum of One Hundred Pounds, to be paid to the person who, within Six Months from this date, shall discover a Seam of Coal, which, in point of quality and locality, (as to distance and accessibility) shall, in your opinion, be of practical value to the Port of Auckland for the purposes of Steam Navigation. I shall be glad to leave it to yourselves to make any further explanations which you may think it desirable to add, with a view to the, attainment of the desired object. I have the honour to be, &c, &c, &c. September 13th, 1852.
The Undersigned, to whom the above Letter was addressed, are prepared to pay the Sum of ONE HUNDRED POUNDS to the first person who shall discover and make known to them, within the lime limited, a Seam of Coal equivalent, in their opinion, to the above description. They also pledge themselves to use their best endeavours to secure to the Discoverer the right of working the Seam, if he should desire it. Fred. Whitaker, John Salmon, W. S. Grahame. Auckland, Sept. 10th, 1852.
