SUBURBS OF AUCKLAND.

The List having been read by the Returning Officer, Mr, Bartley came forward to propose John Logan Campbell, Esq., as a fit and proper person to represent the Suburbs. Mr. Campbell was a man generally eB«

teemed for the suavity of his manners, and his gentlemanly bearing ; and was one who, if political irritations S3 arise In the Council, would be likely to throw oil on the troubled waters, and |to allay the acerbities of extreme feeling. His long acquaintance with the colony also rendered him a most suitable person to represent their interests. He would be able to look upon public questions as they came before him with unbiased and enlightened judgment. . Mr. James Robeitson seconded the nomination. Dr. Campbell then addre*.ed the electors He acknowledged the very flatten^ terms in which Mr. Baitley had propospd bim. Both he and the constituents were untried in their present relations; but he trusted (hat in future years on reviewing their conduct in those relations it would be found that on both sides they had exercised their political rights for the benefit of the country. He had hitherto kept aloof from taking any public part in politics, believing that as things stood he could be of little use ; but now that they" were in the possession of enlarged privilpges under which he thought he might be of some seivicp, he felt it to be his duty to bear his share of the political burdens in common with his fellow-colonists. He had long had a deep interest in this colony, and had seen the arrival in it of many of those who now stood before him ; whatever experience he had acquired should be brought to bear upon the measures laid before the Council, and be assured them tbat he would do his utmost faithfully to represpnt their interests. No other candidate appearing, the Returning Officer declared John Logan Campbell. Esq., duly elected. Dr. Campbell briefly returned thanks.
