The Expedition to the South Seas,— The Herald 20, Captain Henry Monglcn JDenhnm, arrived at Woolwich on Friday afternoon, from Chatham, and her tender,' the Torch stenm vessel, Lieuteuunt Commander Chimmo, will be ready to leave on their exploring voyage to- the South Sens. The Herald will take on board here her chronometers from Greenwich and « great variety of presents for the native of the southern itl&nds The Herald hus been fitted and equip^WJ itt the moat efficient manner for the interesting service in which she will be engaged, with her tender the Torch, for the long period of from five to seven yvars. She i» twelve able seamen abort of complement, of as fine a sbip'B company as over trod ft deck, and is excellently officered. In addition to the eleven executive officers, tho Herald will have on board a naturalist, an artist, a practical gardener, and a native interpreter, and at tha medical officers' in the expedition have been for their taste and zeal in natural history, it ie expected they will send home many valuable additions to the museums of this country, although the bydrograpbioal department of the islands of the South Seas they are about to visit is the ostensible object ol the expedition. The Herald in her internal as well as external order, presents an excellent specimen of what a ship may bo rendered in two months, owing to tho liberal fittings accorded by the Admiralty , and the excellent contrivance and adaptation of all that has been considered requisite for ship and boat service, in the completion of which the captain and fiist lieutenant have had the able cooperation of the authorities of Chatham Dockyard, have rendered the Herald admirably adapted for the service in which she is to be employed for a long period Tho officers and crew of the Torch were mustered on Saturday on board the Lucifer steam-vessel, where they ara to be accommodated until their own vessel is ready, and were inspected by Captain Denham. The Torch ia to bo fitted .with a netting promoting round tho vessel to a distance of from 10 to 14 feet, to prevent the savages of the South Sea Islands getting on board without permission, should they attempt to board tho vessel and take the officers and crew by surprise. — Times April 26.
The Pkgsident Steameu. — From Barbadoes, by tele* graph, via Boston, we have accounts, taken from tho Grenada Chronicle, that on the 4th of April a ship's figurehead of unusual dimensions was cast ashore on that island. It hns been originally fully eight feet high, and is that of a senator in tbg act of speaking, lie is partially bald and holds a scroll in his right hand, tho left grasping a scarf, which ia partially thrown over him. The papers conjecture, on what grounds we do not learn, that it may be a part of the ill-fated steamer President. — London Times, May 13. The Titanitt was consumed by fire on Wednesday night, while laying at anchor off Cowes. The Titania whs an iron schooner yacht of about 100 tons, and nailed a match with the American clipper last autumn, in which she was defeated by that celebrated craft.— Europban limes, May 14.
Tho David Luckie was dostroyed on her voynge from Demorara to London — crew saved. The Mary, of Liverpool was burnt on tbe Gold Coast; there were 700 barrels of powder on board, and consequently tbe vessel wns blown to atoms — crew oared. — European 7'i?»es, May 14. '
