ORIGINAL CORRESPONDENCE.
To the Editor of the Nisw Zealaxdbb. Sin,—The appearance of Mr. James Farmer as a Candidate for the representation of the Southern Division, while Captain Porter is still in the field, has created no small degree of wonder. Mr. Fanner was amongst 'the first to ask Captain Porter to allow himself to be put forth as a Candidate, promising if he would that he (Mr. F.) would do all in his power to insure his (Captain P.'s) return. But ?us persuasions failed to induce that gentleman to comply. However, on coinng to Auckland, the solicitations were so numerous nnd influential that Captain Porter did become a Candidate. Meanwhile Mr. Farmer had taken the field avowedly for the purpose of keeping it for Captain Porter, and, on being informed that Captain P. would stand, at once retired and became an active canvasser for him, nominally, but, as it would now appear, really for himself; and, on having rjjj/r his way, after the manner of the Southern Cross (though I have heard that that honest and consistent orb denies all knowledge or participation in Mr. Farmer's proceedings?), (luring which he used the name of an influential supporter of Captain Porter's to get votes for himself, to the detriment of that gentleman. ftfr. Farmer comes out again after having retired on the 7th"vgTuly, and for the reasons stated in his advertisement of that date. If Mr. Farmer intended to go to the poll, why did he retire ? H»ving retired for the reasons stated in his advertisement, as above, why does he again come forward to the prejudice of Captain Porter? Really this conduct seems so strangely inconsistent, if not grossly dishonourable, that J must cease to speak of it for the present. — I am, Sir, An Emctoh of the Southern Division. Auckland, August 17, 1852.
