COMMERCIAL INTELLIGENCE. (From the " Sydney Herald," July 24 )
The Legislative Council have been occupied for some time past with the nesv Duties Bill. Moving with the gieatest caution, lest they should impose too heavy <i tax on any one aiticle ; and appaiently heedless ot the lact that <uiy duly (hey can impose, will be coiisideieil tullnig by the settleis when compared with the enoiinons rates of carnage they have been compelled to p,iy since oni gold discoveiies, mainly owing lo the absence of idilioads, 01 any passable thoioughfaie. The aveiage cost of carnage per 100 miles has not been less than £8 per ton dining ' the last twelve months; and the cost dining the next twelve months will piobably be fifty per cent lughei. How tuflirig must 50s. pei ton on doty on sug.u appeal, when compared with eight pounds per lon upon Sail, Sugar, lion, Beei, &c. ; the ongin.il cost of winch is vety Iniling, and which are mostly consumed by settlers; and the caiuige down to S>Uney, absorbs neaily the whole of any pioduce they can send to maiket, with the exception ot wool. All membeis of Council aie mole or less mtciested, jet how little tins all unpoi t.int subject appeals to have occupied the attention ot out lepievntatives. Several anivalsdurmg the week have bionght a laige number of unmigidiits to our shotcs, a foie-taste of what we h.i\e to expect The (|ii<intities of goods, as |is usual in immigrant ship* aic light, but sutlicienl to depiess lates to some extent which wlio pitviously at famine prices. We notice no Floui, but theic is nothing ot which we stand more in need. Puces have gone up at Victona, which would lead us to suppose the Melbourne market is b.ue. Ale and Poitei in wood and bottle have come foivvaid m veiy lull quantities dm ing the week. Biandy has been quitted at 12s. and 12s. 6d., but these lates can bniely be maintained lor incoming lots. Rum — linpoitdlion* have been lathei full to wnirant a continuation of lecent Ingh lates. Gin— A vuy limited quantity las come foiwaid, quotations aie 20s per case. Wine— The caigo of the Viagante was quitted at iites which will doubtless lead to repeated shipments from the s.ime qu.trtei, oui market is raiely in so tavoui.ible a position, foi tdkn oft solaigc a quantity ot low puce wines. Fiuit—Ai avals have been too heavy to lealize the high lates hitherto quoted. Tin Plates — A heavy consumption, — but prices have declined owing to the laige parcels which have come foiwaid lor some time past. Cigais— An extiaoidinaiy impoitationof 3J million by the Helen Blind, will materially influence this m.nket pievionsly so bate. Coffee— Without any knowledge of immediate ai rivals, unporteis have been over anxious to push salts of plantation soits ex "Belle Creole" ; some samples, veiy supenor in quality, have been sold at a low late. Sugais have advanced about 30s. per ton; stocks on importers' hands aie declining fast. Thecaigoot the Helen Baird being for lelinini; pin poses, does not come m competition with the tiade. The lelincis aic not belling their sugai s in the mean time. Teas— Oil) piesent stock of f.m quality is inadequate to supply oui wants foi the nc\t month; unless we haveamvals during tlmt pciiod consumers will be compelled to use the lowest samples in the market ; the quality being as low as we have seen. At auction fair samples - (damaged) realized vr>> fn'l rates, and pnv.itely a large tiade has bceu done with -Uic stoieketipeis. Canvas Jus come in quantity by late ships, and been quoted at piices tanging tiom Is. fid. to 15.. 0i1. Hams— A Imsje parcel by Bloomer, lealized md., the cost of which i' home does not, we believe, exceed 50s. pei cwt. riovisi" n s have been paying enoimous piolits loi some time i, ->t, which high i.ites will doubtless lead to heavy shipments. Salt— Oui nidikci is bate, arnvals have been light. Slates are wanted. It. Harm/tt, Bioker. Sydney, July 24.
