[advlkiisfmlni.J To the Proprietors of the Southern Cross. SIRS, — Our attention has been called to a report of yesterday's Regatta in the leading columns of the Southern Cioss of this morning, in which a coarse attack is made upon Captain Swift oi (he Anadir (the Flag ship on the occasion) for not hoisting the British Ensign in addition to Ins own National Colors. As Members of the Regatta Committee we besj leave thus publicly to state, that for any such omission we are alone responsible. We do not think it necessary to explain to the wiiter of the article referred to, why no British Colors were hoisted. We are content to be judged by our fellowtownsmen as to how far we are capable of slighting our country's flag; while the ciowds which yesterday thronged the noble vessel's decks can best bear testimony to the cordiality of the welcome given, and the kindly feeling which prevailed throughout the day. But we wish to diaw your serious attention to the spirit of the article referred to, unjust and undeserved in its application, and calculated as it is, only to do mis chief. For what a tale will Captain Swift have to tell nt other ports — " That when lie gave up his ship to the Auckland ° People for their Regatta, his only return was abuse in 11 thsir next clay's newspaper." In the name of our fellow townsmen, and for their sakes also, we take leave to deny all sympathy with this ungracious and vulgarly-written attack on a gentleman and a sti anger amongst us. In conclusion, we perform but a grateful duty in expressing to Captain Swift our coidial thanks for the ready kindness with which he gave up to us his stately ship, and for the unremitting attention and courtesy shown by himself and his officers to all who visited the vessel yesterday. We shall make tin's letter as public as the article to which it refers, and are sirs, your obedient servants, (Signed) John Salmon, Umpiie of the Regatta. Thomas Lewis, John Wai son Bain, William C. Daldv, T. Edward Tayloii. ibAAc J. Burgess. Auckland, 30th January, 1852. *
