ORIGINAL POETRY. CORONERS' INQUESTS. " Woe unto them that rise up early in the morning that they may follow strong drink, that continue until night, till wine inflame them! And the harp, and the viol, the tabret, and pipe, and wine are in their feasts, but they regard not the work of the Lord, nor consider the operations of His hands." Isaiah v. 11, 12 Sir, he has fallen prone, On the ground bare, Though he be ill to see Should he lie there? Raise him up carefully, Lift his pale head, Ah, how it droops again - Room for the dead! Yes, he has pass'd away, Suddenly call'd, Well may the passerby Look on appall'd, His was the strong hand, Quaff'd the bowl deep, His was the merry laugh — Well may ye weep. All God's fair image lost, Sunk in the brute, All warning voices hush'd Till they were mute; All his repentance left For a sick bed — Now God recalls his breath,— Bear off your dead! See as they bear him, His bruis'd brow, his hair Matted, his features Death set in despair. Is it not horrible Ghastly and true? Ye who look on in awe Angels guard you. Surely the warnings are Many, and dread, Surely they never can Rightly be read. Ill for our Country, Ill for our town, Speak these sad records Which death writes down. Now in the daylight 'Ere death night fall, Now preparation make Now if at all And, let the cunning too Mingle strong drink, Think that they stand on Eternity's brink. St. George. Auckland, 1851.
