With our shipping intelhg< nro of the 7th September, 1850, we gave the following: — " Tho Albert Edward, on the 28th August, wa* in company with tho barquo Larpent, bound to Shangliae, in latitude 7 N.,lon»Hudo 10« 50 ii ;— had h K ht winds and finn woathor nil up the China aeu, and no berious gains during the voyage." By bucking the head Bails, however, the ship came oil almost immediately, but on sounding tho pumps, no lets than seven feer of water were found in the hold; all hands worofoithwiih busily kept at pumping until 2h. 15m., a. m., of the following day, when, as there was no prospect of gaming on the leak, Captain Gilson ordered the quarter boats to be lowered, and the launch to be hoibted out. But in those purposes they were prevonted ; the natives coining down in great numbers and plundering them of every moveable. So situiited Captain Gilson determined upon putting to sea again, as he snid, to endeavour to roaoh Hongkong, a distance of four hundred miles and upwards, and tho boats started together, but the launch still leaking coiibideiably, wuh unable to keep up with the lighter boat, and paiting company, she was never more seen ; although it was flftei wards heard that Captain Gilson had landed near Soutli Cape, and procured water, (there, indeed, ho might havo been murdered, or taken captive, and may still bo in slavery for aught wo know or believe to the contrary.) At daylight on tho 14lh, tho launch having rounded tho extremo point, tho crow landed on a shelving beach, surrounded by hushes, intending, hefoio proceeding any further, to do their best to repair the bout. About Uh. a. m., nhno.st without any previous warning, they found themselves in the midst of a dead fno of matchlocks. Young Mr. Bland was observed to spring a great height into the air and fall flat on his face, dead ; those who could swim immediately took to the water, from whenco the savages were seen, with long knives, stabbing those who wore wounded, and immediately cutting off their heads, which to the number of nineteen, were thrown into a tornblo bonp. Blake, tho jomor, says that, ulthough terribly wounded by a shot when in tho water, ho swam for several miles across a hrond bight, and had landed under a huge sugar loaf rock, thoroughly exhausted, thinking that he wns the only one saved, when, turning his eyes seaward, he observed the boy Hill, pursued by an enormous shark. Tho lad appearod nearly exhausted, nnd wns about to biuk, but cheered by his voice, be gave a fow more strokes, nnd grounded in bhoul water, from whence bo dragged himself over tho coral to tho place whore Blake wns Hitting. Hore they bad not remained long when two natives with matchlocks wero ueen traversing a beach at some distance, aypftrently in pursuit of them. But they succeeded in hiding thornselvea for the tune, and aftorwaids escaped to tho mouutains, where they remained until the 12th. Exhausted nature could hold out no longer, and at a time, says Blake, when the feelings of a cannibal had arisen in his breast, and ho insanoly thought of partaking of his comrade's blood, rather than remain longer without food, they wandered into a Cold where Home villagers woro at work. Vrom thorn they obtained a meal of rice, and shelter, nnd wrie uftorwards made to work with tho village labourers from daylight till daik; Hometimos in boats diving lor large shell fish, ut others with liooa about the paddy ground. Thoy also heard of two white men being in captivity, but could not for a cortainty ascertain where. On return of tie Pilot wo arc infoiTriGu that If. M.S. The oxtormmution of every member of the blood-thirsty clan inhabiting the southern promontory of Formosa, would be but an act of jufclififiblo vengeance ! but, in face ol the sickening feeling of false humanity pervading a great number of our Remitors at I home, there is no prospect of anything of this kind. Of this, however, we are fully cortifiod — .Formosa is a j part and pa i eel of tho Chinoao dominions; and in terms of our treaty with the govorninont, that government was bound to inform us of the dipanter that had occured, for it is foolish to suppose that it had not boon long known and bruited about. Tbo day of retribution will eventually come, and Gully, and the crows of tho Ann, tho JMerbudda, and Larpent, numbeiing upwards of two hundred souls, who havo been biutally massacred in cold blood on those inhospitable shores, must then be fnnrfully avenged. During the captivity of Bhiko, Hill, and Bens, sovoral vbsnclh were seen to pasa close to tho island j ono in January last, proves to havo bpon 11. M. S.
