GENTLEMEN,— I thank you for the kind terms in which your Requisition is conveyed, and cannot but feel gratified at such a call from a number of my fellow-townsmen, representing various classes and interests in the community. I have not sought for myself the office to which your choice invites me •, and notwithstanding the pledge of support which you have been good enough to offer, I wish it to be understood that I have not the slightest desire to bind you to it, if any other candidate should, in the interval before the election, seejm to you better adapted to occupy the position of your representative : — but should I be elected to it, I shall faithfully strive to perform its duties, with a sense of the responsibilities which must especially attach to the proceedings of the Common Council during the first year of Incorporation, in which it must partake so largely of the character of a Legislative Assembly. My views of the Charter have already been stated so fully, and, I tru^t, so clearly, es.pecially in the Ward meetings to which you refer, that any repetition of them heie would ■lie an unnecessary trespass on your attention. Further reflection and additional information only deepen my conviction that those views are the most consistent with the real and permanent interests of the Borough ; and, whether in or out of the Common Council, I shall esteem it a duty to myself, to my family, and to my neighbours and fellow-settlers, to carry them out by all legitimate means at my disposal. I have the honor to be, Gentlemen, Your obedient Servant, John B. Bennett. Auckland, Oot. 30, 1851.
