MUNICIPAL ELECTIONS. — MEETINGS OF BURGESSES.
A Meeting of the Burgesses of the East Town Ward was held in Mr. Jeremiui Waiti,\ Brick House, Queen-street, on Monday evening. Mr. A. W. Hans urn, having been called to the Chair, read the advertisement convening the Meeting, and the requisition signed by several Burgesses of the Ward, in compliance with which he had convened it. He then vacated the Chair, in order to give the Meeting an opportunity of choosing a Chairman actually belonging to their own Ward, from which he had removed to the Middle Ward. At the desire of the Meeting, however, Mr. Hansard resumed that post. • Dr. Davies, referring to the acknowledged eligibility of either Mr. Whitaker or Dr. Ca.mpbemj to represent the Ward, stated that bofh those gentlemen had, 021 private and public grounds, declined to undertake the office. He then proposed that Mr. Davy, (of the firm of Daw and McDowell, Shortland-street) should be requested to allow himself to be put in nomination. This motion was seconded by Mr. Ma.thkws, and agreed to. Mr. Buckingham proposed Mr. Alison, ShipWright ; the motion was not seconded. Mr. Bei-ts proposed and Mr. Alison seconded Mr. Commons, who, being present, expressed his willingness to serve, in case no more eligible person should be selected. It was resolved that a General Meeting of the Burgesses of the Ward be held in the same place on Friday evening next at 8 o'clock, and that Mr. Davy and Mr. Commons should be requested to meet the Burgesses on that occasion, in order to state their views on the Charter. Mr. Turner was then called to the Chair, and votes of thanks to the previous Chairman for his services, and to Mr. Waite for the use of the room, having been passed, the Meeting separated. A Meeting of Burgesses of the Onehunga Ward was held at "Mr. George's Inn, on Monday. The Eev. G. A. Purciias took the Chair. Mr. Ormsuy and Mr. Normav were nominated as suitable persons to represent its interests. A similar Meeting was also held on Monday, at Mr. Tye's "Prince Albert Inn," to fix on a suitable person for the West Epsom Ward. Captain Powditch and Mr. Paton were nominated. A Meeting was held last evening in the Eist Suburban Wai d, at the "Windsor Castle." Mr. William Hay occupied the Chair. Mr. F. W. Merriman was proposed by Mr. Steele and seconded by Mr. Boyd, as a fit and proper person to represent the Ward. Mr. Merriman was present, and consented to become a candidate. Several questions were put to him as to his views of the Charter, and the mode in which he would proceed to carry out its provisions in the event of his return, his answers to which gave satisfaction to the . meeting.
Lecturfs on Intemperance. — Last evening the Rev. "Robert Ward delivered, in the Presbyterian Church, a Lecture on " Intemperance as it affects Families," being part of the course on Intemperance in progress by Ministers of the Evangelical Alliance in Aurl land. The discourse was well -arranged, cvgent, and impressive, and the audience \»as numerous and attentive. The Rev. J. Inglis and the I?ev. A. Macdonaxd conducted the devotional exercises on the occasion.
