' Gold was to many a more engrossing subject than the elections. The Ballarat Field, about fifty-four miles from Geelong, was very productive. There were rumours of the discovery of Gold | in almost every pait of the country, but the only additional spot in which it was proved to exist was near Mount Alexander, in a secluded valley about a mile west of the road from Mcli bourne to Swan Hill.
