HORRIBLE OUTRAGE AT SONORA

Co.'s oxpross wo yesterday received a letter from Sonora, dated nt 12 o'clock at night on Friday, tho 27th inst., the particulars, m a binned manner, of one of the most terrible and bloody outrages that has ever taken place in California. The ouUage consisted in the deliberate cold-blooded minder of our contemporary, JJr. Gunn, the editor of the Sonora Urrald, of his assistant. Mr. Couffroth, one of tho compositors, Mr. Christian, and the shooting of four other innocent persons. As described to us in the letter of our correspondent it was a most dastardly and infamous outrage, and every one of those concerned deserves the halter or a worse death. The occurrence is said to have originated from the publication of an article in tho lhrald, but we are uninformed aa to its character. Tho lettor subjoined contains nil the information of which we aie possessed, and until we receive a more explicit account, forbear to niako further comment on the transaction. Rcnyold's Express Office. Sonora, June 27, ISJ o'clock, Midnight. Editors Alta California : — An extraordinary excitement is now raging in our town. Three persons bave bepn killed and four wounded. The difficulty originated between some gamblors and tho editor of the Herald, from an article | which had been published in that paper. A. party of them went to the publication office to night, armed with revolvers and knives, and effected an entrance. They dragged from bis bed Dr. Gunn, tho editor, and shot him through tbo head killing him instantly. They next fired at a young man named James Coffroth, who I understand, asisted Dr. G., and was formerly connected with a paper in New York or Philadelphia. Mr. Christian a compositor on the paper, was also shot dead. Four citizens, who hearing the firing and noise bad proceohed to tho spot, were also shot at and wounded. The Mayor of Sonora has ordered out a largo patiol of citizens, and great excitement prevails Those who were killed were universally respected • ond esteemed here. P. S. 3 o'clock. — Four of the gamblers supposed to have been concerned in the affray have boon arrested and are now in- custody.
