The Lucy J&tncs sailed from New Plymouth on Sunday morning, and 'arrived at Manukau on Monday. Capt. Joy co spoke the barque Bangalore, off Cape Egiiuint, 97 da_\s from England, bound for Cauteihury with Emigrants. By tins arrival, tho melancholy intelligence of tbo wreck of the barque Maria, Capt. l'lnnt, has been received, of which the following particular are given in the Wellington Spectator : — It is with very deep concern that we record the total wreck of the baique Maua near Cape Terawiti, accompanied with a greater amount of loss of human life than lias previously happened in any similar calamity on the JVJew Zealand coast since the colony lias been established. The information on the subject at present is nere-sunly imperfect, but the following paiticulars, we believe, may be relied on : — According to the account of the only surviving European, tho Maria left Lyttelton on Sunday last the 20th instant, in company with the Raven, for Wellington, having on board 30 or 31 persons, two of whom wcie cabin passengers, the others were the officers and crew of the vessel, and stockmen. About 4 o'clock, a.m. on Wednesday, they found themselves running on towards shore, the weather being very thick, and the wind blowing haid on a lee shore. The vessel struck about a quarter of a mile from the shore, on the rocks off the mouth of Makara valley. When the vessel struck, several of the crew cut away the quarter boat, and jumped into it; but it was immediately swamped, and they were all drownpd. The vessel broke up very shortly after she struck, those on boaid trying to save themselves by rafts and pieces of timber j but only two succeeded in reaching the shoie alive, a European sailor and n Malay, who have been received into Mr. JVl'Namara's house, and kindly taken care of. Tho man who was saved was on a raft with several others, when near tho bieakers he jumped from the raft and advised hia companions to follow his example, they refused to do so and were all drowned. The bodies of nine persons have been recovered, including those of Captain Plank and a stockman named Sole. The names of the two cabin passeugers are not known, and we must wait for certain information on this head from the next arrivals from Lyttelton. The vessel was in ballast, having only a few casks of sperm oil on board. Wo believe it is intended to biing the bodies into Wellington, and have them decently interred. Mr. St. Hill, the Resident Magistiate, went out yesterduy to Terawiti, and sevei.il police have been sent to protect such property as may bo washed ashore. When the sailor who has escaped from the wreck is in some degree recovered, further particulars will be obtained of the cause of this sad catastrophe, winch has occasioned Tery deep concern and sympathy (or the melancholy fate of the sufferers, particularly for her unfortunate commander. — Wellington Spectator, July 261h.

H.M.B, Fantome, sailed from Sydney on the morning of Saturday the 16th inst. 11. M.5. Havannah, was to sail on the next day for London to touch at Rio de Janeiro. The Malacca from London had arrived at Sydney with 36 needlewomen sent out by Mr. S. Herbert's committee. The Bank of England had also arrived. On coining down the English channel she spoke the bhip Blenheim, from Sydney the 19ih January; she also reported the arrival in the London Docks on the 23rd April of the Phoenician, 105 d.iys from Sydney. On the passage home the Phoenician lost her top masts in a gale, and was compelled to put in at Pernnmbuco (o refit. The Salsetta, from Sydney, via Bahia, arrived on the 23rd April. A new barque, the John Buchaman, had arrived at Sydney, on her first voyage, from Grangemouth. She touched at St. Jago on the 18th May where the U. S. ships of war, Porpoiso, German Town, and Portsmouth were refitting. The Bondicar had sailed from Sydney for London and had on board Australian gold valued at £28,785. The Obeion cutter arrived from the Soutli Sea Iblands and and reported that while at Walhs' Island 10 canoos with about 70 natives came alongside, apparently in a friendly manner, but finding the Captain was on abore, and. the vessel short handpd, they took possession of her. Ultimately the veaspl was given up without much trouble. On the sth July, the French Roman Catholic Missionary schooner Etoile dv Matin, Captain Cooney, was at Home Inland, having returned from a cruise at New Caledonia. Prom this vessel information was received of the deHtruction of the Lucy Ann cutter, Captain Bell, of Sydney, the Captain and crew having been barbarously murdered by the natives of Murray Island. Captain Bell had made a vigorous but useless resistance, and it was said that seventeen of the natives fell by his own hand before he was himself clubbed to death. News had reached Sydney of the wreck of the brig Pioneor, that was chartered by the Government of New South Wales to search Port Essington and Torres Straits for Dr. Leichhardt. She sailed from Sydney on the 29th April last, and was lost on Cockhurn Reef, Torres Stiaits, on the 22nd May. The crew wero taken from the wreck by the barque Waverly, and taken on to Batavia. H.M.S. Fly we understand will positively sail on Thursday morning foi England. The mail will close at four p.m. this day.

Thaeker & Co. having, in the kindest manner, permitted the pubhe to inspect the 100 lbs. of gold, has caused a desire on the pair of the beholders to go and tiy their fortunes m the Gold Distuct. Our ordinaiy occupations h.ivo become 100 tame, and tbeniinJs ol Libouiers, mechanics, and others become more unsettled. Numbers, who a shoit tune sinco returned from Opbir, lesolved novor to be tempted to seek tor gold again, aie now proceeding to the Turon. A demand for supplies has agum sprung up, and Tea and Sugar have been taken in quantity at nnpioving rates. llybonskin has gone as high as 7js., and Congou 975. 6d. to JJi *'>s. (or fine. Stocks are leducing r.ij)idly.— Pampanoa and Taal Sugars have been rp.ili-ing 225. and 245. Considerable parcels of Refined No. 1 pieces have been taken nt about 2bs, — a very low figure, considering our exhausted slock. Should tber.i be no arnvals, and refinois requiie to enter the market for Pumpangas, we liavo little doubt before the month closes this description of Sugar will realise as high a iate as the refined article has been quitted at. A large portion of the Madagascar Sugar ex " Nouveau Jacques Gamer," has been taken for counter purposes, being bright in color, spaikhng, nnd wrll gianulated. This article is much approved of by the trade, — Flour is in demand at full mill prices, being taken freely for the mining districts, although carriage has risen again loan enormous price. — JJatburst has now become a place of bo much importance as to lequiro the establishment of a line of rail-road with as little delay as possible. Excepting in Flour, Sugar, and Tea, tiie amount of business being done is tufling, — Kxchange continues at a piemium of 1 i per cent., notwithstanding the quantity of gold dust being shipped. It.
