DIOCESE OF LYTTELTON.

Whenas wp, William Grant, by divine permission Jinhop of Sydney pnd Metropolitan of the Province of Australasia, are by the law and usage of the Church Catholic, and of the United Church of Euglond and Ireland in particular, entitled by virtue of our Metropolitan autho-ity afoie-tud, to consecrate Bishops within oi>r said niovmce, with concurrence of the suffragan or comprovincial Ui^hop thereof; and whereas we did lately receive an application in writing, under the hand of the Ret 8i end '1 !>omps Jackson, Doctor in Divinity, no\7 or heretofore Pr« bciviary of the Cathedral Church of Saint Paul, in the diocese of London, within the Province and Jurisdiction of Canterbury, whereby he, the said Reverend Thomas Jackson, did represent unto us, that with the advice and agreement of Your Giace, and aho of the Right Reverend Charles James, Bishop of London, he, Thomas Jackson aforesaid, had been designated to bo Bishop of a Bishop's See within the now existing diocese of New Zealand, to be erected and called the Hishoprick of Lyttelton, by virtue of the authovuy of Her M.vjebty, to be signified by Letters Patent under the Great Seal of the United Kingdom, with the consent, of the Right Reverend George Augustus, Bi&hop of New Zealand, first obtained and signified thereto ; and whereas the said Bishop of New Zealand has, by writing under his hand, bearing date the twenty-first day of February, in the present year, cigmfied to us his appioval of the erection of the said See cf Lyttelton, and has, on behalf of himself and his successors, freely consented that all that portion of the diocese of New Zealand lying to the south of the 43rd parallel of south latitude, and including the islands called and known by the names of Chatham, Auckland, find Stewarts Islands, shall be wholly separated from the said Diocese of New Zealand, for the purpose of constituting the Diocese to be annexed to the See of Lytielton, and placed under the jurisdiction of the Bishops thereof, subjpet nevertheless to the Bishop of the Metropolitan See of Sydney and his successors; and whereas the aforesaid Reverend Thomas Jackson, Bibhop Designate of Lyttelton, hag, by writing under his hand, dated on the third day of March in the present year, represented unto us, that for divers weighty and sufficient causes him thereunto moving, he is desirous that the foim and order of his consecration to the office of Bishop of Lyttelton should be solemnised in the Meti ©political and Cathedral Church at Canterbury, and thereiore piavs that we, on his behalf, will dispense with, sui render, and forego our right in that respect : We, therefore, the aforesaid Bishop of Sydney, Metropolitan of Aubtialasia, do hereby dutifully signify to youi Grace, our agreement in the said application, and do request that }our Grace, under the guidance of Holy Smut, will proceed to consecrate the said Rev. Thomas Jackson, Doctor in Divinity, to be a Bishop of the Church of Christ, in this our province, he having been fiist examined carefully as to his fitness for the taid ofllce of a Bishop, whereunto be is called, and as> to hia ability to execute the same to the edifying of the Church, and io the honour, praise, and glory of God.
