Califotinia Markets. — May 7 : Great activity was manifested yesterday, and also to day. All kir.ds of lumber is in demand ; holders seem disposed Jto meet the wants of the community without asking exorbitant rates. Common rough materials may be quoted at 50 dollars ; timber and boards, suitable for wpather boardinsr, 65 dollars to 70 dollars ; Georgia pine, tongued and groovpd,7s dollars, landed. Bricks have run up so high that but few buildings can be put up of this material, 80 dollars being asked by many. Crockery and glassware have advauccd over 100 per cent. The most kinds of liquor have been active at 25 per cent, advance and large sales of brandy have been made. Hams have been sold at 13 cents up to 25 cents. All kinds and descriptions of fuiniture have been sold at muc^ better prices, allowing a profit to the importer. Carpetinga, oilcloths, office fuiniture, and paper hangings, have run up materially. Sale 3 of potatoes have been made at 7 cents. Not much attention has thus far bpen drawn to flour, the stock being good, and other articles holding out better prospects for an immediate rise. Domestic goods, clothing, boots and shoes, good iuvoicps would now about covers cost and charges. Some articles which have been very dull are now called into requisition, and sell readily. Articles of immediate necessity are first looked for, and the advance is most maiked. The rise in many goods must of necessity be very gradual, as capital must be first used for articles of immediate necessity. Great difficulty exists in regard to seamen ; they refuse to ship at 150 to 175 dollars, and are not disposed to go at any rate. May 10 : The same activity continues in the trade in general. Although there may be a disposition to speculate, the want of" safe storage, and a good deal of capital being wanted for building and other necessary disbursement, business is mostly confined to sales for actual consumption. We understand the Flour Company made sales to the extent of 9000 quarter-sacks Chili flour at the rtte of 53 dollars per 100 lbs. Lumber is fully sustained. The holders of bricks having found it impossible to sell at prices asked, have given way, and sales are making at 40 dollars per 1000. Sales of clothing have realised more than 50 per cent, above former rates. Domestic cottons and tacks are called into use again for lining houses, which is to be regretted, on account of fires. Coals aie neglected. Seamen's wages for long India voyages keep high ; for short voyages they are at much lower rates, — Alta California, May 14.
