THE CEMETERIES.

Where nought can break the deep repose, Crowning a soft, and green ascent, Each in its white enclosure shows Our infant city's ornament. No horrors shroud the silent bier— Death is a Beautifier here. All honour to the head that plann'd Such lovely resting spots as these, Where sunny mounts of verdant land Look over leagues of rippling seas, Where decency and beauty strive To keep all holy thoughts alive. Together all persuasions lie Where every sight around is fair, As if it said— that smiling sky— " No bitter variance enter there But with your growth so still increase All kind good will, and heavenly peace." Religious contests shake the world— Proud Europe groans from sea to sea, And bloodred banners are unfurl'd To fill men's minds with anarchy; Far, far from us, and our young Isles, Such useless war of words, and wiles. Enough for us to know one way— By a Redeemer's holy blood; Enough for us to strive alway In every action, to be Good. They firmliest yield their parting breath— Who little learned live by faith. And daily may we thankful be Our goodly lot has fallen far From ev'ry sight unsafe to see, From words of strife, from sounds of war; Where e'en the very humblest head Can claim a flow'ry couch when dead.
