The Mauritius.

Tiierl' was intelligence from the Mauritius to the 18th of February. The new Governor, J. M. Higginson, Esq., arrived at Port Louis on the Bth of January, and was well received, although the people still bitterly complained of the unexpected recal of Sir George Anderson. The finances of the Island were in a very

prosperous state, the Revenue for the year 1850 having exceeded the Expenditure by nearly £43,000. In the embarrassment of this wealth the people were discussing what should be done wth the surplus. The planters and merchants earnestly, and with apparent justice, urged that a considerable portion of it should be appropriated to emigration purposes as the reduction of the differential duties between British and Foreign sugars has rendered it of the utmost impoitance that the Colony should be *upplied with abundant and cheap labour.
