SATURDAY, MAY 10, 185 T.
A considerable part of the last Government Gazette — about twelve pages — is occupied by ! a Report of a Missionary Tour in the New Hebrides, &c, on board H.M.S. Havannak, by ' the Rev. John Ingms, which is addressed to Sir George Grey, and published by his Excellency's direction. The cruise of the Havannah extended over three months, (from August to November, 1S50) ; during which period she visited the New Hebrides, Queen Charlotte's Islands, the Solomon Islands, and , New Caledonia. We have not yet had time to peruse Mr. Inglis's Report with the attention which we are sure it deserves and will well repay ; but even in glancing rapidly over it, we can perceive that it abounds in valuable information respecting the physical and mental characteristics, the manners and customs, the religious opinions and observances, and especially the language of the inhabitants of the interesting Islands to which it relates. We hope at an early opportunity to transfer to our columns, if not the whole, at least some of its principal statements. We add a summary of the other contents of the Gazette. It is notified that the duties and correspondence in reference to both Battalions of Pensioners, which have heretofore been per- ! formed by the Civil Secretaiy, will in future be conducted by Major Klnny, to whom all communications respecting the Pensioners of New Ulster, which are intended for the Go-vernor-in-Chief, are to be directed. The Governor-in-Chief has directed that Captain Nugent shall remain in charge of the Native Secretary's Department as Acting Native Secretary. It is notified that his Excellency the Lieu-tenant-Governor will attend at the Council Chambers every Monday, Tuesday, and Friday, at 12 o'clock, for the transaction of Public Business. Tenders ror the Printing of the Maori Messenger for the six months commencing with the Ist of July next, will be received at the Native Secretary's Office until noon of the 9th of Jane. The Governor-in-Chief has, we are gratified to find, authorised the donation of Twenty Pounds to the Chiefs Kawiri and Tahana and other Puhetapu Natives, as a reward for their meritorious exertions at the wreck of the John Whiteley. ■In consequence of a Report from the Wardens of Auckland declaring their opinion to that effect, " Chadwick's Slaughter House." in Freeman's Bay, is to cease to be a Public Slaughter House from and after the 31st inst. The Governor-in-Chief has directed the publication, for general information, of the letter addressed to Mr. Parris and other Land Claimants at Taranaki by a number of the Land Owners, &c, in this town and its vicinity, — expressing their opinion that no objection would be held to the exchange of land by claimants in New Munster for land in this Province — together with the letter in which it was enclosed to His Excellency. Both these .documents, with others on the same subject, have already appeared in our columns. At the desire of the Auckland Wardens, the Resident Magistrate invites a Meeting of the Justices of the Peace at the Court House on Wednesday the 12th instant, to estimate and assess rates of damages for the trespass of Cattle, and to specify the fees to be charged by any Poundkeeper for anything done by him under the Impounding Ordinance. The Supreme Court is to sit for the despatch of Criminal Business on Monday the 2nd of June ; and for Civil Business on the Saturday following. The Acting Harbour Master gives notice that any person removing Shingle, Stone, Shells or any part of the Soil from the several Beaches around Auckland, without permission of the Harbour Master, or, in his absence, of the Resident Magistrate, will be proceeded against according to the 17th clause of the Harbour Regulations. The last notice is the appointment of Mr. James Magee, as Ranger for the Hundred of Onehunga.
