PUBLICANS' LICENSES.
Yesterday being the Annual Licensing Day appointed by ihe Ordinance, a number of the Maw is' rates of this District assembled at the Resident Magistrate's Court, to take into consideration the applications that had been sent in Cor Licenses to sell spirituous liquors for the ensuing year, commrnring on the Ist July. The applications of old license holdeis were taken first in order, and the fallowing were granted : Richard J. Hunt, Masonic Hotel, Princes-street, night license. (The Chairman of the Bench, on informing this applicant that his license had been renewed, stated that the bouse had not bern conducted properly heretofore—gambling was constantly practised in it; by bad characters who were in the habit of frequenting itend warned him that unless he conducted his house better for the future, hi\ license would be taken away.) William Dennett, Duke of Malborough, Qneenitreft, night license. James Locbcad. Union Hotel, Queen-street. (One of the Bench, Mr. Mayne, had strong objec* tions to the manner in which this house had been conducted— the disorderly character of it had come under his own observation. Lochead was warned by the CliHirrran that unless his house were better con. ducted in fu'ure he should be deprived of his license. Several complaints had been m»de of gross cases of irregularity and diiorder having taken place at his house, which was repmeuted to be the report of very bad characters.) W. L. Rogers, Greyhound Inn, Queen-street, night license. Edward Paitington, Waite Hart Hotel, Queen, street. David Sheehan, Crown and Anchor, West Queenstreet. He s«id that at the last Annual Licensing Meeting, it was deemed advisable to withdraw two houses from the number that had been licensed the previous year ; during the past year the population bad not incieased much over one hundred adults, and two or three hundied children ; with this fact before them, it was for the Bench to consider whether or not this increase of population would warrant such a lame increase of public houses. For bis own part, he would rather refuse to grant new applications at the outtet, than be obliged to t»ke away licenses from individuals who h«d embarked their means in erecting houses and providing accommodations for carrying on the business Tha Chairman then hid before the Bench a description of the houses, &c, of new applicant*, which he had caused tobe drawn up, as. Commissioner of Police, to assist the magistrates in com hiding on the fitness of the premises for purposes to which they were intended to be applied. The majority of the Brnch agreed that there were a sufficient number of licenses granted for the requirements of the community ; but proceeded to consider the new applications, seiiadm, in reference to the several localities in which it was proposed to open fresh house*. Only two out the list were granted, ▼12 t John Brigham, Prince Albert Inn, Shortland-street, night license. (The application was granted on the grounds that the npphcant had previously held 9, license and
conducted bis house very creditably, and on conditions that tie would erect a brick house on the liremed pivmisis, to be commenced within the ensuing twelve months.) Walter Scott, Half-way House, Epsom Road. The following applicants were refused licenses : Francis C. Lewis, William liaikins, Aiher John Hoop, William Currie, Daniel Lockwood, John Byrne, William Nicot, Thomas Hancock, William Bacon. Edward Costley, James Palmer, and Jerry W ite.
