MATAKANA COA£>.

fir HERE is every probability that Coal, in I a state to be worked, exists on property held under a Crown Grant at Matakana. Surface indications of a promising character abound, and specimens collected from various parts of the property may b3 seen at the premises of the proprietor, Mr. William Greenxvood, in Queen Street, Auckland. The desirability of obtaining Coal on the East Coast, in this district, and the great advantages of Matakana as the locality, are facts too obvious to require any remarks to secure attention to them. For the purpose of exploration it would be sufficient to bore in two or three of the most favourable situations, at an expense not exceeding £300. Gentlemen well aware of the important advantages to be derived from a supply of Coal are willing to cont'ibute a sum ot money towards this expense, but are unwilling to become share-holders in a Company ; ( whilst, on the other hand, others desire to participate in the profits which may arise from a well-situated Coal mine. In order to meet the views of all desirous to assist in the underta- ' king, it is proposed fo raise £300, in such sums as persons may be willing to contribute, and, as soon as subscribers to this amount are ob- J tamed, that a Meeting shall be called to select a Committee of Management, under whose di- i rection the money shall be expended. Should J the exploration prove successful, it is then proposed that a Company should be formed, — when such of the subscribers to the fund now to be raised as may wish it shall be entitled to shares in proportion to their present subscriptions, — and the amount to be advanced for exploration taken as a payment on account of, them ; and such of the subscribers as do not ] wish to become shareholders shall have their* money returned out of the subscribed capital. , The proprietor, Mr. Wm. Greenwood, is willing to grant a Mining Lease upon the most favourable terms, and will enter into an agreement with the Committee of Management, as soon as appointed, to do so when required. He is also willing to subscribe to the exploration fund, and to become a considerable shareholder in the Company when foimed. All that is at present required is that names of subswibers should be affixed to one of the Subscription Lists lying at the Office of the Union Bank, Messrs. Prown & Campbells, and Mr. W. S. Grahame's. and, when the lists amount to £300, a Meeting of Subscribers will be called before any further step shall be taken.
