Demehaua. — There was a petition recently ligncd by some of the inhabitants, and to which we, think, we made allusion aome time ago praying his excellency tha Goyernor and the court of Policy, to adopt stcpi for assimilating the institutions of (he colony to those existing; in colonies pissessed of Councils and Houses of assembly. On Thursday last the subject of this petition was brought under the notice of the court by one of thee lective members, the Hon. Peter Rose. So m resolutions moved by Mr. Rose, to the effect that his excellency be requested to transmit the petition to Earl Grey, were earned. Montserrat.— This island is said to be reduced to the lowest ebb of misery and wretchedness. It vu once prosperous and contented, but is now on the brink of ruin. Famine pestilence and death stalked through the length and breadth of the land in the hideous shape, balf the inhabitants are starving and the other half have not the means of relieving them. The one who considered himself first insulted, chose the rifle as the weapon to be used— distance forty yards— the other accepted the weapon, but demanded twenty yards, as he was nyope »nd could not see at a greater distance. Hi* antagonist insisted [on the forty yards, as he was a Presbyope, and could not see at a shorter distance, and in this state the quarrel was left at the last advivces.
