In 1810 and tiie two following years the directors made calls to the extent of i? 10 pel share, and borrowed .£300,000 upon debentures, o which the Union Bank, the Edinburgh and Glusgow and North British Insurance, and others, claim to be holders. In 1847, these debentures began to fall due ; and the director*, being unable to pay the same, made <i fuiiher call of £ r o re<- share, and in 1818 another of £2 10s. per share, which were scarcely responded to. In January, 184'!), many debentures and in'erest cou. puns thereon, which then became due, weie dishonoured, and the company was unable to meet us engagements and to continue its business. How to Kill RAis.—Mr. W. Kidd, of Hammersmith, who had a whole aviary of prettily plumoged pets destroyed by rats in one night, has now published an acrount of hia recent campaign against the enemy :— " Por tlie benefit of whom hereafter fall vistimi to the rapacity of rats, I will lay before them my military tactics. Instead of commencing hostilities at once on diicovering the extent of the ravages committed, I gave encouragement to the enemy, by throwing in his way divers articles of food, such as dripping, lurd, mea% bones, full, and other dainties. This guve him confidence, threw him off hiu guard, so that he revelled unsuspiciously. I took care, meniitime, to secure all the hen-houses, and shut the inmates up every night to piotect them from their bloodthirsty foe. The gieat field day was Friday last. I completed all my arrangements before the hour of dusk, impatiently waiting for the rising sun on the morrow. My poison was carbonate of barjtes, ground to an impalpable powder, and phosphorous. An incision was firht made in the bucks of the herrings, and the carbonate of barytes well rubbed in. The parts were then, as artistically as possible, reunited. Sprats being smaller than herrings, and more plastic, were pierced through with a piece of deal wood. Had a knife, a fork, or the human hand touched them, all would have been vain. The barytes was then 'drilled in,' and other sprats not poisoned, were placed above and below them, so that suspicion was disarmed. Latat atiffuis in herbu ! Barytes is without tabte and without smell ; hence its great value. The way in which I applied ihe phosphorous would take more space to detail. When the preparations were all completed I nationed my trusty messengers in every part ot the garden and shrubberies ; some under tree, some under fliwer-pots, some hidden by a brick, others partly embedded in ihegaidrn walks, &c. They ' did their bidding right bravely. On coming down stairs the morning following, 1 found the enemy had fallen into the snare. There was a serious diminution of the pi o visions furnished for their repast, and the hand of death was obesrvable on every side. They had eaten ravenously ; they had been seized with cruel thurst, they had sated themselves with water ; they had ' bur-et their boilers !" To vie an expressive and most appropiiate classical quotation, there was a visable deceuio pereuntiumsuccessiopercuntium, which clearly proved I had won the day, In a word, two days and two nights effectually routed the •whole. Oh! 'had they 10,000 lives, my great revenge has stomach lor them all.' — Gardener's Chronicle. We find in the Freemasons 1 Quarterly an address delivered by Mr. Tucker, at Shatteshury, which ends right gallantly.* * Persevere, my brethren, in your malonic duties ; conciliate all, conciliate every one, more especially the ladies ; and that U only to be done by showing to them that we walk worthy of our profet>»ion and we can truly say — • No mortals can more The ladies adore Than the free and accepted mason.' " Punch gives an abridged repoi t of Philpottsw Gorham :— " The Pope hii compassions for sinners to prove, Sends Bulls, without ineicy, to bore 'em ; Our Pmi.roTTS, to show his more fatheily love, Refuses permission to gore' em."
