TREMENDOUS CONFLAGRATION SAN FRANCISCO AGAIN IN RUINS ! Lo ss estimated at 5,000,000 Dollars ! [From the " Alta Caliornia," June 15.]
Again we have to rccoid one of those calamitous orcuirence* which has struck terror to the hearts of t-very citizen, and destroyed the prospects of inuny an enlcrpnsing and worthy individual. The greatest conflagration that has yet iifll'clcd our ill-fated city, and by which there has been more property dchtroycd than at ony previous period, occurred about eight o'clock yesterday morning. The fire originated in the Sacrurnento bakery, n email wooden building in the rear of the Merchants' Ilotel, and was caused by a defect in iho chimney. A gentleman who occupied on adjacent building informs us that on two occasions, previously, the building ■was on fire from the surne cavie, and that he had frequently warned the proprietor of the unsafe condition of the building. The fuc waa quickly communicated to the Merchants, Ilotel, the Waverly House, and the Sacramento House, and thence it progressed rapidly, destroying all the buildings on the south side of Clay street from Kearney blreet to the water ; on the north side of Clay utreet, all the buildings between Kearney and Montgomery, except Messrs. liattell's and Ellenrd's; Saciamento street, from Kearney street to the water has not a building remaining ; California street, north side, from the Custom House to Kearney street is destroyed, and ull the most valuable buildings on the sume side of the street below Montgomery; the east tide of Kearney street is in ruins, betweni Clay and California streets ; every building on Montgomery-street, be* tween Mr. Naglee's and Mr. Cannon's Auction store on the same tide, and Clay street wharf and Adams & Go's on the othor, were also destroyed. Between Montgomery street and the water much valuable property was destroyed, including all the buildings on Central whnrf, and a large quantity of lumber. The fire was first discovered about eight o'clock, and its progress wai not arrested until half-past eleven. The following efctim&tc of the individual losses may be considered as nearly accurate as it is possible to de» term inc. Taylor and Co., W. 11. Duvis, aicall losers to a considerable amount. Besides the above, are a number of individuals whoie losses, amounting to lees than a thousand dol* lais, are not enumerated. Thp bankers, James King, Williams, Wells nnd Co., and 15. Davidson, saved all their treasures, books, &c. In passing along Montgomery street, early in the alternoon, we saw Mr. King's sign on a building opposite to where he occupied in themoining. He was transacting business as if nothing had occurred ; having been burnt out thice times, he has got used to it. The building occupied by Adams's and Cos. express was saved principally through the instrumentality of a force pump which was kept in operation. Wet hi in* ket i were placed upon the roof, and were of material aid in saving the building from destruction. In noticing the powers and influences which operated in stopping the progress of the fire, we must particularly allude to the artesian well connected with Dart's Pacific Bathi, in Montgomery street. To this, and the extraordinary exertions of a large number of active citizens, mnst be attributed the allaying of the proeress of ihe fire to the noith of Cl»y hticet. The store ship Niantic, at Clay street wharf, wns untouched. The excellent precautions of Mr. Whilehoad, the owner, nnd Mr. Noyos, the superintendent, have on thii, as well ai on former occasions, been (he means of saving thousands of dollar* in the immediate i neighbourhood. Large lighteis of eighty or ninety tons capacity, were always kept in readiness for an emergency of this kind. The printing material bought by Messii. Crane nnd Rice, on Tuesday last, werebuint in Messrs. Eveietl's j and Co.'s warehouse. These materials were to have been delivered yesterday, and the purchasers expected to have issued the first number of the Pacific Courier on Monday next. They have nn establishment on the Chesapeake, which we understand may bo expected in a few day*. The materials alluded to in the commencement of this paragraph, were sold at auction on Tuesday, for •8"8,830, but as the articles had never been delm-icd to the purchasers (Crane and Rice) tne loss will fall upon the ihippcr, Mr. Conner, type founder, of New York. The Journal of Commerce office is in ruins, nnd the proprietors, Messrs. Bortlett and Robb, are severe suffert'is thereby. They were also buined out by the fiio lust month. Within n very short time, they have despatched materials to Stockton, to establish a newspaper in that city. They have also an oflioe in San Jose, and with these aids they will be enabled to icsumc the publication of their paper in a few days. The building in which Dr. Robinson intended t° locate his Dramatic Museum, was entirely destroyed' Also the Olympic Theatre. The burning of the latter building did not involve much loss. Tlip brick building fronting Central Wliarf, was considered by the proprietor, Mr. D. Gihhs, as lire proof, and consequently nothing was removed from tho store. It was however, entirely destroyed, togcthct with the contents, excepting the sale, which we understand, contained 25,000 dls. in gold dust. There were many men who worked nobly to save the property of their fellow citizens. Whcieso mnny were conspicuous, it would nppear invidious to allude to pniticuUr individuals, and omit others whoiC labors were none the leas arduous. There was also some hogishntHß exhibited and an instance which came under our notice, we cannot forbear alluding to. Somejfive or fix persons were called to assist in taking articles from A building which wni in danger. They had no sooner removed the articles to a place of safety, when they returned and insisted btrc nuously upon being paid immediately for their services. In many cities a man would feel degraded in receiving compensation for service rendered on such nn occasion. A meeting is called for tonight, at Mellus, Howard, and Co'i. office, for the purpose of organizing a Tire and Hook aud Ladder Company.

Mr. Alfred Robinson is among the heaviest lookers, lie had a very lurge stock of goods, of almost every vurieiy, and Ins loss must amount to at leant 75,0i)0 dl. Propitiations for rebuilding were going on ycfiterday, and alreadj' the frnmes of half a dozen houses havo been creeled. So far as wf enn nseertnin, no accident befel any of the thousands of individuals who g.itheied around the scene of the conflagration. There were some ruinoura of such accidents, hut they could bo traced to no reliable source. During tho niging of the fire, the wind blew harder than we have ever known it do in the forenoon. This was pnrlieulnily noticed in the harbour, and Beverul vesals b roke from their mooringa.
