Mr.LANCHOLY Acciddnt.— On Tburidny nigUt ]ait, vie regret to itate, 8 seaman belonging llie schooner Isa'ella, named Win. Strung, wu* suddenly drowaed l>y filling overhoaid from ihe gangway. It being tbout ten o'clock, and the wretched man intoxicated at the timp, every effort made to savp him, proved ineffectual. Our Harbour now presents an unusually lively appearance, there being no less than eight Barques—viz , the Incliinnan, Lord Stanley, Sarah Scott, Monarch, Clara, Undaunted, Constantinople, and Fairy Queen ; besides our regular traders— the brig Moa« Captain Norris ; sehoonr r Isnbella, Captain Gadgr ; the Go* vernment brig Victoria, Captain Deck ; and a good number of coasting ciaft.
We are glad to be able to hail the new year and the new era of nn'igntion, with the cheering s'atement that there are now ninety-three ships in the cou se of building at th : s port, being an mc ease nn the number reported by us a few weeks ago. Mon of them are of large tonnage \ indeed we believe that the tonnage it much more above the average than the number ot ships, indicating a growing demand for the beit descriptions. Of fourteen building on the North Sands, thirteen, we understand, hare found purchasers; and ordeis have been received for imny otlieri by the tiaJe genera'ly. In the course of a few days the keels of the two motis'er fellows we have before referred to— one of them seven hundred and the other one thousand tons, burthsn — •will be laid down for our good friend, Mr. Lindsay. Merrily, when bu It, we wish they may row, md better may they speed I But here is acurioui fact : ins'ead of tile English shipowner going to the foreign ship market for his vessels, the foreigner shipowner — what P otectionist will believe us?— is actually coming as a purchaier to the Wear and th<.» Tyne. — Sunderland Herald. Burning of the Ship "Ganghs" at Poplak.— Between nine and ten o'clock on Saturday morning information was received at the various bngade engine stations that a deitiuctive fire had broken out amongst the shipping in Messrs. Somes' dock at Poplar. Foggo, the chief officer of the L ndon brigade, started to the sfiene wth several engines, when the fireman found that the splendid ship Gangee, upwards of BCO tons burthen, advertised to sail for China on the 4th of next month, had taken fi e, and that a seiioui amount jf property had been consumed. It appears that the •hip-carpenters working in ihe yard perceived dense bodies of smoke pouring from the hatch ways, and upon upon entering the ship thry found the main cabin in flames. They instantly guve *n alarm, but before assistance could he obtained the fire was rushing from the various openings on ths deck, and mounting the mizen mast with sunli impetuosity that this entire destruction of the vessel appeared inevitable. The engines of the West Indi.) D»ck Company and otheis rere got to wori., but in spite of ihe most strenuous xertiona some 'hours el<jpsed ere the fi »nes could bs ■onquered. The fire so weakened the mizpn mast that c ts wi-re entertained lest it should fall and kill some Ihe persons engaged in extinguishing the fire, and to pull the other masti over. One of the men, erefare, mounted the neit mast for the purpose of ulting away the tackle which held the two together ; do : ng so he nearly lost hu life, for the instant he vered the ropes the mi^en mast fell with a tremendi crash over the dock gates into the river, and at the .me time the man was swung round with inch vionce, that had he not have held on by an iron rinp, : must have been dashed to piecci. The whole of de bedding, furniture, fire -arm*, &c, ia the main ibm, have been consumed ; and the ship so severely urned that it will take some thousiind po inds lo repair er. — Watchman, Jan 9. During the 1849 18 ships, 37 b»rqtiei, 41 brigs, and 5 schooneri, being a total of 151 vessels, left Boston »r California, and during the sanae period 1849, 1973 mericau, and 811 B itish vessels entered the port of etv York.
