[a card.] MR. THOMAS FLORANCE, Hydrographic & Land Surveyor, respectfully solicits a share of the Patronage of the People of the Northern parts of New Zealand. K3* Office, Fort -street. [advertisement.] To the Editor of the New-Zealander. SIR— Will you do me the fayour to correct an error into which the editor of the Southern Cross has fallen, with reference to my ignorant and unfortunate infringement of the. "Arms Importation Ordinance." In the editor's remarks on the case it is stated that I was charged nith selling a doubled barralled gun aud ' two boxei of percmsian capi. Thii if a mistake and an aggravation of my misfortune ; the matter itands •imply thus, I was summoned on Tuesday morning to answer the complaint of Taupiri, an aborigin 1 native, for selling one box of percussion caps to another native named Hemi Te Kopa. Conscious of having done what was so charged, I attended the Court at the hour required, and not only avowed my ignorant culpibilily in that matter, but alio became informer against myself of having likewise sold a double barreled gun and another box of caps to another native. In the first case, where a regular information was laid and upon which I was charged a penalty of with costs, was imposed ; upon the second, where no information had been laid, at least were no summons had issued, and m whi»h I became my own accmer, a ■econd penalty of £59 with costs, was decreed. These Sir, are the real facts of the case, and I wish you and the public to be made aware of them, so that a due distinction may be drawn between confession before and after accusation. I am, &c, &c, John Ireland.
