The River Chief put in here yesterday evening, on her way to California, having sailed from Melbourne on the 6th initant. She is commanded by Mr. Wm. E. Mathews, who formerly sailed out of this port as mate of the schooner John Bull. She was obliged to touch at this harbor for supplies of water and provisions, having about 160 male and female passengers on board. The following is a portion of her cargo for San Francisco :-34,000 feet timber, 5,000 palling, and 4,000 shingles. The Warrior, barque, from LeitU the 25th August, and Aberdeen the 2nd September, arrived at Port Phillip on the 4th instant. The Polynesian says that every vessel which leaves for California takes large quantities of vegetables, and that two brigantines bad left during the week ending 22nd September, almost entirely laden with Irish potatoes and other vegetables «nd fruits. Some thousands of barrels will find their way to California in the course of a few weeks ; and as long as they will bring #25 per barrel, the editor says, " there will be no lack of purchasers in Honolulu for them. Potatoes, Irish and sweet, squashes, melons, beans, onions, poultry, swine, &c, &c, will all be wanted, besides the staples, of sugar, molasses and coffee."— Hobart Town Courier,
