Tbe ' Gloucester' tailed from Sydney for California on the 23 rd December ; bat when about 90 miles from land, It wa« discovered thtt the was leaking, and that the pumps, being choaked or otherwise defectire, were unfit to reduce the water that the wai taking in. It wai deemed ad vi table to return to Sydney, where ■he arrived on the 25th, and after examination and repain, the sailed again on the 28th ult. She hat called at this port for water and other provisions, and will, it is laid, ship tome timber alto. Tbe ' Enterprise' it quite full, and will tail for San Francisco thit afternoon. The ' Fanny' has most of her cargo shipped, and will follow the ' Enterprise' in the course of next
Paicxs at San Francisco. Breadstuffs, &c— The Flour market has declined, and good and met American and Chile flour can be purchased at a trifle below our quotation!, (9 to 10 dollars per 200 lbs.) Pilot, NaTy Bread, and other article! of breadituffa are still dull from an overstocked market. Provisions.— > Beef continues dull of tale, with a large itock on hand. Meis and clear Pork are in demand, and firm at our rates, (22 to 23 dollar*). Hami and Bacon, « prime article, are in demand and scarce. Liquors.— Good Brandy in hhdi. ii dull of sale ; in baireli of 15 to 18 gallons, firm at our quotation, (1 dol. 40c. to 1 dol. 62jc. per gallon); all common liquors are selling at Tery low rates, the demand being principally for good qualities and in small packages suitable for traniportation to the mines. Ale and Porter (English), is scarce, and no sales of importance hats taken place since our last. Brandy In cases of 1 dosin htfe declined from 9 and 10 dol. to 8 dol. tines our U|i quotations, owing to ia orcr stocked
market ; Champaigne and Claret are In demand ; the latter hat advanced from 4 dol, 60«. to 6 dol. for favourite brands. Lumbbk, &c. — American plus, fioraiee coniumption of this article foi building purpoies priced firm (250 to 270 dol: p. m) ; several cargoes have arriviL ;rom Oregon and other parts, bat insufficient to meet the demand. Shingles are scarce, and much wanted (quoted at 25 dol. 30c). We have heard of a sale of lime in barrels at 36 to 38 dol. per barrel. The arrival of a whale-tbip has supplied the market (•perm oil at from 50 to 70c, and black oil at 17 to 17|c. per gal.) The cargo was taken mostly for exportation. The arrivals this month from the Atlantic and foreign ports have been very numerous, and necessarily throw a large amount of goods in the market, which have been disposed of at low rates.
