To the Editor of the New Zcahnder. Sir,— l have no with to enter into any controveriy public or private, written or oral f with the " Southern Crois." — Hit controversial abilities overwhelm me. For example— A Public Meeting lakes g}ace,— l remark upon the unfair advantage there taken of the Public, and upon the inconclusive arguments of the principal speaker. To the best of my 'power, I substantiate the correctnesi of each remark.— The •'Southern Cross", summarily replies, "puerile, sense-less."-"The remarkable acumen and close reasoning of such a reply are too conclusive. No tempting prospect there, to argue with Buch an adversary ! The barbaroui weapons of " Became" and " Therefore' 1 would be no match for such great guns of civilised warfare. Had I been met on the low, vulgar ground of proofs, I might have dared to struggle a little longer ; I might have had the temerity to aigue that premises were unsound or inferences erroneous, — but when it comes to a trial of strength in capabili'y of abuse, and in recrimination of coarse invective, I at once own my inferiority and withdraw from a contest for which I do not feel myself fitted by congeniality of mind and proficiency of practice. I remain Sir, your's, &c. Ceiticus. Auckland, 22nd September, 1849.
