THE PLACER. (From the Placer Times, May 5 )
Undku this head, we are sorry to s»y, the news is intolerably stupid. Since our last we bate conversed with turmrcus fresh corners in Irom the mines, and obtdiiied b»t as a solacing item that " plenty of gold leraains"— under, we presume, a greater plentitude of water. On Yuba River, they tell us, the search for gold is well nigh given over. About one hundred of the miners remain encmnped upon this stream, who generally prefer a of labour to hard work and a yield of ten dollars or an ounce per diem. Buf one man, we are told, remains upon Bear Creek, who, assisted by several Indians, turns out about forty dollars prr day. At the Dry Diggings, batween Bear Creek and the American, where, during this season, valuable discoveries have been made, a considerable number ate employed, mostly last year miners, the daily average we can snfely set down at twenty-eight dollars each man. The Indians in this quarter are reported quiet, and hopes are entertained that peace may be preserved. The North and Middle Forks remain as reported. In the vicinity of, and upon the rivers flowing into the San Joaquin, most work is probably at present done. The Sanislaus, though very highi continue! to be worked. The mountain cannons are worked by immense numbers, and gold found at the depth of fourteen feet below the surface, we aie credibly informed. Machines are al'Ogether vied.
