The New-Zealander.

Me just ami fear not: Let all tlie'ends tliou aims't at, be thy Country's, Thy God's, and Truth's.

THURSDAY, JULY 5, 1849.

From the detached and irregular English papers in our possession, we have endeavoured to glean a few interesting scraps. We trust that, before our next, the Mary Catherine will have arrived, and put us in possession of our colonial files, furnishing us with the intervening dates, so that we can make up a connected digest of European news of the early months of the year up to March, as well as of events passing in the adjacent Colonies. Dr. Prichard, the author of " Researches into the Physical History of Man," &c, died in London lately. Dr. Gaskell has been gazetted as his successor in the office of Commissioner of Lunacy. The strength of the police force in London on the Ist of January, 1849, was 553. On the Ist of January, 1848, it had been 520. The total number of persons taken into custody by the police during the year was 14,688. ' The gold mines in the county Wicklow Ireland, which were formerly worked by Government, and which then paid under slovenly and injudicious management, has come into the possession of an independent company, who are expected to work them to advantage. A series of letters in the Times, signed " Emeritus," had called considerable attention to the subject of financial reform in the army. The writer proposes three kinds of economical saving. First, a re -organization 'of the infantry regiments at home and abroad, diminishing the number of officers ; second, a thinning of "brevet Generals, by not filling vacancies ; and, third, a lightening of the military pension-list, "by the civil employment of retired officers and private soldiers. He calculates that the saving which might be effected by these steps would amount to £289,479. The people of Manchester rejoice in the hope that the Queen will visit their town after the close of the session of Parliament, during her progress to or from' Balmoral Castle, in Scotland. At the last Annual Meeting in London of the " Protestant Dissenting Dissenter* of the Three Denominations," strongly worded resolutions were adopted reiterating a protest against the connexion of Church and State, and pledging the Meeting to continued and earnest efforts for the abolition of Church Rates and of the Ecclesiastical Courts ; agaiust the renewal of the Eegium Donum and every payment out of the 'public pifrse for religious or ecclesiastical purposes ; for the unrestricted admission of Dissenters to the Universities ; for the striking out of the declaration required on becoming a member of a corporation ; and, generally, for the removal of every privilege granted to the Established Church to the injury of Dissenters, 1 According to an opinion just obtained from an eminent English Lawyer neither the incumbent of a parish nor the church-warden has power to sell pews in churches. A Floating Church, which will seat 500 persons, has been constructed on the Delaware, and will be brought down to Philadelphia for the use of the seamen and boatmen of the port. It is to have a fine organ, and a bell. The top of the spire is 70 feet from the deck. During the last year the Bishop of Newfoundland consecrated seven new churches. A Trappist Monastery is about to be founded in Kentucky, 1 200 acres having been purchased for that purpose. The first church bell which has been lieard in Egypt, since the occupation of that country by the Moslem conquerors, has lately "been suspended in the tower of a chapel built by the Jesuits at Alexandria. The Mormon imposture seems to make some progress in Wales. At the half yearly association \ at Merthyr on New Year's Day , the " Latter Day Saints" reported no Conferences ; 1,001 baptized during the last six months ; and 550 officers. The " Swansea Herald" adds, « The thousands of Mormons in Wales appear to have great affection fo"r and confidence in Captain Dean Jones, who intends returning to the Valr ley of the Salt Lake in California. About 350 saints will emigrate with him. It appears that 300 ships could scarcely carry the hosts who are anxiously desiring to emigrate to, as they say, their future home. — The " North Devon Journal" states that an Italian from London, has been in Bideford vending medals of the Virgin Mary and the Saints, which have been readily purchased by the Tractarian party in the Established Church, at the price of one guinea each.

We have copied into our issue of this morning, an article from thfc J Daily News " of the 2 1st of February, entitled, <• Pehtonyille— its Results." The London writer dells merely with the English experience of the matter. Even that, is by no means of a flattering tendency. We may, probably, hereafter show that the negatives of this prison are productive of the most positive evils to the colony upon whom its regenerates have been poured, and that Penton Villianism, in Port Phillip, is a synonyme for the perfection of crime.
