HOUSE OF COMMONS.—March 6, 184 9. THE WAR IN THE PUNJAUB.
Lord John Rugiell roic, and, amid deep silence, spoke at follows :— Sir, the honorable gentleman, the member for Montrose, asked me a question yesterday relating to the affairs "of India. 1 then stated that Her Majr sty's ministers had tendered certoin advice to Her Mnjeity on that subject; tbut that until I h«d received a reply from Her Majesty, I could not answer the question of the honorable gentleman. I hive now to state that the advice which was by m humbly tendered to Her Majeity was, that Sir Charles Napier should be appointed Commander-in-Chief of the troops in India [loud cheers from both iides of the house]. Sir, Her Majeity was pleased most graciously and fully to approve of that appointment; and both the Duke of Wellington, the Commander-in-Chief, and I, having seen Sir Charlei Napier to day, I have the satisfaction to state that he is ready to obey Her Majesty't wishes, and to proceed to India in ihe capacity to which Her Majesty has appointed him [loud Mid Ion" continued chfering]. The Court of Directors have not yet met, but I believe that they will to morrow } and, from what I know of their patriotism, I fully expect that they will receive with joy and satisfaction the appointment which Her Majesty has been pleased to make [continued cheering].
