WANGANUI.
Small pox is stated to be prevalent at.Waikato. Pre» parations are being made to introduce vaccination extensively among the natives of Wanganui, who are most anxious for it. Mr. M'Leau has completed Ins examination of the Wanghaihu ; it is a broken country, but offers many eligible spots for farms. The newly acquired district of Rangitiki ii much praiied by all who have seen it, and now that it is about to pass to the Europeans, Rangihaeta is disposed to quit it for ever. The loss of the " Rainbow," though a moit unfortunate event, is in perfect keeping with her caieer during the past month. Three weeks ago she had an opportunity of entering the river, being close in, with a flood tide and fresh breeze in her favour. She, however, took the alarm, and retreated. On the 19th instant, she again appeared, only to meet her fate. On the evening of the 20th she was becalmed whilst passing the bar, an anchor was let go, but as the tide rose a heavy swell began to roll in, and drove her ashore. All the passengers (about 35 in number) were landed in safety. Providentiallj in the immediate neighbourhood of our river, a stranded ship is certain of a soft though uneasy bed; but the delays and incidents to which all vcflsels strange to the port are liable, make it much to be wished that the long expected pilot and boat were here. — JVellinqtm Independent, May 2.
