Forty Eight, with its convulsions dread, Are now but moniincnts for history ! More than the wont of mortal misery Defiled it, in its fateful evolation ' More than one star of earth's idolatry Sunk quenched and quelled, e>e run its mid career. Magnates that dreamt their ancient rights, divine, Awoke to find their rock of trust a reed, Fleeing the freemen late their abject thralls. We-whom Life's storm hath spared, though from our side To sweep the dear familiars of our youth — We yet remain to work salvation out. Oh, may this morning of the new-born year Awake us to oui glorious privilege. Oh, may that blissful aim inspire our soulh, Suhdue our he.irts, ami guide our steps to God!
