CEYLON. (From the Sydney Herald, Dec. 4 )

A VFHY general insurrection had takrn pkce among the Kaitdiany and other natives of Ceylon. We are unable to state potitively « hat was the origin of the rising, "but we gather that it was in consequence of an attempt to levy a poll tax, which the natives were told would render & personal examination of the women necessary. There had heen much previous dissatisfaction, and this belief cauied the feelings of the people to become so excited that they proclaimed a descendant of the family that once ruled, King of Kandy. They then attacked th<» plantations, committing serious outrages, and made them&elves masters of tome of the smaller towns. The troops in Ceylon had had several skirmishes with the natives, in which of course they were victorious ; but no general attack would be made until reinforcements arrived from Jndia, which we perceive by Mauritius papers received on Saturday had taken place. In the mean time a large portion of the island was in the possession of the insurgents.
